Needful Things, a general store in downtown Plains, is adding a coffee shop and ice cream parlor to its services.

Owners, Tammy and Rafael Orozco are proud to announce the opening Cafe Orozco inside their store.

“When we originally bought the building, we wanted to start a coffee and ice cream shop to begin with,” said Tammy.  “It just took a bit to get it going, but we finally did it.”

Cafe Orozco will be serving coffee drinks such as lattes, frappes, and smoothies along with baked goods and eight hard ice cream varieties.

“Coffee seems to be a booming business these days, and ice cream seems to be what people want in the summertime,” said Tammy.

Although they are officially open for business now, Tammy said she will probably host a grand opening event in the spring or summer, once the weather is warmer.  She has just announced it to people she knows, and curious customers in Needful Things who have seen the new counters and shiny espresso machines.

“I think business will really get going in the summer when visitors and travelers are driving through town, but people are still welcome to come in and see what we have now,” said Tammy.

Tammy and Rafael eventually want to expand the coffee shop into an old fashioned soda fountain.  They bought Needful Things in June of 2010, and have had help from family and friends turning part of it into a coffee shop.  Tammy said they purchased a lot of the cafe’s counters, machines and decor when they bought the building, but have been waiting to install everything until they opened Cafe Orozco.

Cafe Orozco also offers free wireless internet to customers, and will be adding soups and sandwiches made to order to their menu.  The coffee drinks are affordable, for example an Americano is one dollar, and a latte without a syrup flavor is two dollars.

“This is a family business,” Tammy said.  “My parents and sister-in-law have been such a big help in starting the cafe.  I can keep the prices down because I don’t have to hire outside help, at least for now.”
