Changes annouced for Thompson Falls market

| March 4, 2011 9:47 AM

The Thompson Falls Market is returning in 2011 for its 4th season of bringing locally grown produce, farm fresh eggs, arts and crafts and baked goods. During the annual Soup Social & Market Meeting, market manager, Katrina Campbell presented news on changes attendees and vendors will see this summer.

‘Most notable is the time change. The vendors expressed a strong wish to close the market at noon instead of one. We listen to the vendors so the market will be every Saturday from the last weekend of June through the last weekend of September from 9:00am-12:00pm,” Campbell shares,”all weekends except Huckleberry Festival weekend that is.”

Other important news included the introduction of the newly established steering committee whose job will be to assist in the overall management and decision making for the Market. “We believe in what the market does for the community and want to help it continue to succeed,”explained Jackie Burgess the market secretary. Bill Meadows, Sandy Green, Sarah Cooper, Jackie Burgess, Lehua Milliken, Katrina Campbell and Meghan Phillippi are the first Market steering committee members.

There are five main goals for the Market in 2011. Become a 501 c 3 non-profit organization.  Produce an additional event known as the Falls Harvest Festival and pumpkin carving competition. Establish a Market Mavens group. Raise additional funds to cover the cost of production items such as tables, chairs and market storage “barn”. “The primary goal though is to encourage more gardeners and farmers to plant a little extra to sell at the market. We need more fresh produce, that is what we hear time and time again,” shares Campbell,”Protecting and expanding our local food network is vital to the community.”

One way the market has works to help potential vendors is by offering a variety of workshops. Upcoming workshops include a Youth Market Entrepreneurship 101 on March 18 from 9:00-11:00am at the State Building in Thompson Falls. There is a $5.00 materials fee and advance reservations are required as the workshop is limited to 20 seats. The second workshop coming up is on April 30th and is about herbs, how to grow, harvest and sell them at the Market.

Currently the Market is hosting a seed sale where 20%-40% of the proceeds go back to the market. For more information on the Thompson Falls Market go to www.ThompsonFallsMarket.com or call Katrina Campbell at 406-827-3559
