Approximately 17,360 tons, consisting of mixed conifer sawlogs, are offered for sale. DNRC recommends that bidders contact the Trust Land Management Division (406-542-4300) prior to the bid opening to ensure that your bid has been received. Do the political parties serve the people they claim to represent, or do they use the people as a tool to advance the agendas of the party power brokers? That’s kind of a chicken or the egg question I guess. It seems to me that while the parties do have basic lofty tenets about how to legislate for the greater benefit of mankind it feels more and more those beliefs are just window dressing and that the party bosses know what they want and do their best to convince the voters that what is good for the party is good for the people. That is; they cultivate votes.

Detention Center on track to reopen

Steps are being taken to get the Mineral County Detention Center back in operation after it was forced to close on Dec. 3 due to lack of staff. A jail committee was quickly put into place and several recommendations were approved by the county commissioners to get the facility back into operation.

Thompson Falls won the Bob Kinney Wrestling Classic held over last Saturday, Dec. 9 with a team score of 184.5. Teams from all over the western Montana traveled to Superior to participate at the annual tournament. Though the number of teams remained about the same, Superior’s head wrestling coach, Charlie Crabb said the number of wrestlers had increased.

The St. Regis Lady Tigers squared off against the Lady Vikings in Charlo on Friday, Dec. 8 with a win, 38 to 27. The Vikings held a one point lead at the end of the first quarter with 10 to 11. But in the second quarter the Tigers turned up the heat and added 14 more points to the board making it 24 to 18 at the half.

In a unanimous decision, Mineral County Undersheriff Mike Boone was appointed county sheriff during the commissioners meeting last Friday, Dec. 8. Three applicants submitted their resumes for the position including Mike Toth who was previously a Mineral County deputy and another man who had recently retired with a law enforcement background who planned to move to Superior from Washington.

Work on the Flat Creek-Iron Mountain Mine Superfund site has ended for the year as winter weather moved into the area. Previously the event had been held on the main floor of the Old Schoolhouse but that space is now being used by a new cafe called “Whipped Up Montana.”

It was the third annual Western C Tip-Off Tournament held on Friday and Saturday in Frenchtown on Dec. 1 and 2. The tournament is hosted in part by Alberton Principal and Athletic Director, Kyle Fisher.
