Approximately 20,352 tons, consisting of mixed conifer sawlogs, are offered for sale. Sealed bids will be opened at the Department of Natural Resources & Conservation, 2705 Spurgin Road, Missoula, Montana on April 19, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. Bids may be hand delivered or mailed and will be accepted any time prior to the bid opening. DNRC recommends that bidders contact the Trust Land Management Division (406-542-4300) prior to the bid opening to ensure that your bid has been received. Bids must be accompanied by a deposit of $12,089.00, representing 5% of the minimum bid value of the sale in cashier's check, certified check, bank money order or bank draft to be applied to the first sale invoice for the successful bidder. Superior teacher to be inducted into Butte Sports Hall of Fame

Lining the walls of the lobby at the Butte Civic Center are glass cases filled with plaques. Each one features a photo of an individual or team along with a short biography of their accomplishments in the world of sports. For 30 years, a Hall of Fame committee and a public forum selects around 15 individuals and teams to be inducted into the Butte Sports Hall of Fame each year.

Colorado woman dies after vehicle gets stuck

An early evening call received by Mineral County dispatch on Friday, March 17, ended in tragedy. The body of Debra Ann Koziel was found by a search team on the following Tuesday afternoon. Her death was determined to be the result of exposure to the weather.

Help offered to get Marsy's Law into action

During last year’s election, Montanans voted Yes to CI-116, Marsy’s Law, also known as the victim’s bill of rights. The law also passed in North and South Dakota joining California and Illinois. It gives victims of crime rights equal to those accused and those convicted of a crime. The law goes into effect July 1, 2017.

St. Regis River nears flood stage as snowpack melts

The banks of the Clark Fork River are swollen with muddy, high water as spring temperatures start to melt the high mountain snow. According to a statement released by Mineral County Floodplain Administrator, Tim Read, area snowpack monitors indicate a snowpack level that is nearing 100 percent of average or above. Though there are no reports of flooding so far, if there is a lot of rain, and higher temperatures, then flooding could occur. Read said that high water events in Mineral County usually occur in the month of April.

Rudi Boukal played to a large audience in The Paradise Center Thursday, March 16. Boukal is an enthusiastic, nervous, and persistent explorer who is also a musician, storyteller, and very inspired and inspirational. His music was a combination of classical, jazz, and experimental interspersed with his own life experiences, wisdoms, and stories of what inspired each musical piece he played on the keyboard. The music he composes and plays comes from a variety of life experiences he has had with family, friends and people he has never met face to face.

This last week was a very busy week trying to take care of the Senate Bills needing to come through the House. It was also a week to present House bills to the Senate committees and study up on House Bill 2, the budget. Any House revenue bills were still allowed to be presented to the house committees for review this weeks well. Those bills will have to pass out of House committees and across the House floor by March 24 to have time to make it through the Senate before we will adjourn.

Superior student, Payton Milender had won the Mineral County Spelling Bee Feb. 22 and qualified for State. She was number 32 and joined 58 challengers in Billings vying for the grand prize.

According to young scientests Kylie Lucier and Chance Bridgewater, chewing gum and listening to music makes a person smarter and helps them concentrate. These were two conclusions found at a recent St. Regis science fair. The fair involved middle and high school students who competed for bronze, silver, and gold medals. Gold medalists go on to compete at the state science fair, held at the University of Montana on March 27-28.

Saturday, March 11 Superior High School held a Little Guy Wrestling Qualifying Tournament. Six teams were present; Plains/Hot Springs. Frenchtown, Missoula. Clark Fork, Thompson Falls, and Bonner. Weigh-ins took place and after some warm ups the wrestlers began according to their experience; Middles started wrestling at 9 a.m., Novices began wrestling at 11 a.m. The juniors would not be wrestling at this tournament, since they will be wrestling at the Inter-Valley Tournament, which will be held in Plains on Friday, March 17 at 5 p.m. and on Saturday March 18 at 9 a.m.

Little Guy Wrestling mixer held in Plains

On Thursday, March 9, the Little Guy Wrestling mixer was held in the Plains High School gym. Junior high students from several western Montana schools (Plains, Hot Springs, Ronan, Libby, and Superior) were involved in wrestling matches on two mats. Each individual round of the match lasted one minute, 30 seconds with an “unofficial” score being kept on the time clocks at the opposite ends of the gym. Parents, coaches, friends, and other wrestlers were on hand to cheer, give support, and provide helpful suggestions to the wrestlers before, during, and after they had wrestled.

The Camas Organic Market recently completed a two-year remodeling project that added more space and a café to the business in Hot Springs. The 40-foot wood and concrete extension has a lunch counter where customers can sit visit with each other and the cooks, as well as sample some of the foods on the menu. There are several large deli cases, and many clear glass and plastic bulk food bins where customers can dispense the amount of foods they would like to purchase. What appear to be hand made baskets can also be seen in many places in the new wooden extension, which has the café on one side of the room. There are also wooden tables and benches near the back wall where customers can look out several of the windows as they eat their meal.

On March 6, approximately 150-180 Plains Elementary students were in the gym running, hopping, and some were even throwing things. Wait, don’t be alarmed and call the school to ask what was going on there, or if anyone was hurt. It was all in good fun and part of the after school program and the Plains High School National Honor Society. The Plains gym was where this carnival took place from 4 p.m. until 5:30 p.m.

The Plains Alliance Church gym was the setting for a surprise party and dinner to honor two men who have together given the community of Plains nearly 50 years of volunteer service on the fire and ambulance services. Nearly 50 people were there to share the appreciation, gratitude and friendship with John Meckler and Stephen Welty, who have made a difference in the lives of so many people who were going through a fire or medical emergency.

It was an entertaining evening of frogs, skits, singing, and dancing as the PEAK Foundation presented their Variety Show 2017. Young and old Alberton residents took to the stage and delighted a full-house on Saturday, February 25. Mineral County residents are breathing a sigh of relief and hope the last storms of the winter season have swept through the county with temperatures predicted to top 50 degrees this week. A welcome relief after western Montana was pounded with several more inches of snow last week. On Thursday, March 9, residents awoke to another six to eight inches of snow, after receiving around four inches last Wednesday.

Truck driver killed

A semi-truck driver was killed March 6 near Superior after his vehicle jack-knifed near mile marker 53. The 65-year-old man from Reseda, California had lost control of his truck while traveling east on Interstate 90. He hit a concrete barrier and his truck ended up across both eastbound lanes. He was inspecting the damage when a Chevrolet Tahoe traveling east hit the left side of the semi and then struck the driver. The Tahoe driver was a 66-year-old man from Alberton. Both men were taken to Mineral Community Hospital. The truck driver died from injuries sustained in the accident. The Alberton man did not receive any injuries. The identities of the two men were not released.

Mineral Co. girls earn All-State honors

Fourteen girls were announced for the 2016-17 Western C Girls All-State selection in basketball. Including Superior’s athlete, junior Kenzie Mueller received first team all-conference and first team all-state. St. Regis senior, Madison Hill also received all-state. Other St. Regis girls awarded was not available by press time.

Superior first-graders brush up on dental care

February was Oral Health Month and Superior School nurse Barb Jasper visited the first grade class to teach about good dental habits. Each student received a brand new toothbrush and was given lessons on how to brush their teeth properly.

Summer Forest Service jobs available for area youth

Summer jobs for Mineral County Youth will be available this year through the Youth Conservation Corps. The Lolo National Forest will be hiring five area youths through this program to do jobs such as clearing trails and streams, improving wildlife habitat, building fences and campground facilities, planting trees and working with the fisheries and streams.

Several truck accidents continue to hit I90 due to hazardous conditions

The Montana Highway Patrol reported 34 incidents between Feb. 26 and Mar.5, as snow and icy conditions continue to sweep down Interstate 90 in Mineral County. Several incidents occurred on Sunday, Feb. 26, and on Saturday, Mar. 4 where higher elevations were hit with heavy snow fall. Especially hazardous conditions were reported on Lookout Pass.

Aeronautics board awards airport funds, including over $40,000 for Superior

HELENA — On January 19, the Montana Department of Transportation Aeronautics Division along with the Montana Aeronautics Board awarded a little over $600,000 in loans and grants to various Montana airports as part of its annual loan and grant program. Superior’s airport, which received $9,192 in grants funds and $30,998 in loans, was included.

Dusty resided in Thompson Falls with her daughter and son-in-law, Robin & Michael Trull. She died of a heart condition that was non-operable.

Twenty-five young archers took over the Sanders County Fairgrounds Pavilion Thursday from 3:45 until 5:30 p.m. They ranged from fifth to 12th grade and were there as part of the Plains Public Schools after school program. Their instructor, Chris McGuigan, wrote the grant for the archery program.
