Clark Fork girls basketball claims two easy wins

| February 3, 2021 12:00 AM

The Clark Fork Lady Mountains Cats had a really good week.

Trailing Western 14C powerhouse Charlo by a game in the race for the conference’s top seed, the Lady Cats were looking for a weekend sweep to keep their title hopes alive.

Mission accomplished.

They opened their week with a Thursday night road win over Hot Springs, 63-30, then followed it up Saturday evening with another road victory over St. Regis, 56-41.

The pair of wins elevated the Lady Cats to 5-1 in conference play, trailing only 14C leader and unbeaten Charlo (6-0). Charlo won the first meeting between the two teams, setting up a crucial rematch this Saturday in Superior.

Saturday against the St. Regis Lady Tigers, the Lady Cats took control early and held a 35-12 halftime lead and 48-23 entering the final quarter of play.

With the Lady Mountain Cats defense clamping down on St. Regis guard Baylee Pruitt, Hill helped ignite a furious comeback rally where the Lady Tigers outscored Clark Fork 18-8 over the last eight minutes of the game.

Lightning quick sophomore guard Isabella Pereira led a trio of double-figure Lady Cats scorers with 17 points on the night, and tied Hill for game-high scoring honors.

The Cats also got 15 points from Cassie Green and 14 points from Lanie Crabb as they held off the Tigers’ charge.

The win improved Clark Fork’s overall record to 5-3. The loss dropped St. Regis, which had already won three more games this year than all of the 2020 season, to 2-5 in 14C play and 4-5 overall.

Against the Lady Savage Heat, Clark Fork came out with its traditional smothering defense that produced several scoring opportunities via Hot Springs turnovers.

The Lady Cats fought to a 21-13 first quarter lead then built it to 39-19 at halftime.

Lanie Crabb paved the way for Clark Fork throughout the evening and wound up with 21 points to lead all scorers for the game. In addition to Crabb’s 21 points, the Lady Cats got 17 from Green and 11 points from Pereira.

Lily DeTienne paced Hot Springs with 11 points, while senior post Lizzy Fisher added 10 to the Heat effort.

In addition to their home game against Charlo this Saturday, the Lady Mountain Cats also have a road game Friday against the Plains Trotters.

Hot Springs plays Charlo this Thursday night in Charlo, the Savage Heat’s only scheduled game with Two Eagle River not playing this season due to virus concerns.
