Mineral, Sanders county track and field athletes qualify for state

Boys and girls athletes from Mineral and Sanders counties dealt with snow, rain and wind at last week’s Western Class C divisional in Missoula to qualify for this weekend’s state championships.

Girls athletes won two events and were runners-up in several others.

Noxon standout MacKenzie Morgan and Clark Fork star Sorren Reese had the best performances.

Morgan ran in four races while winning the 3,200-meter run, placing second in each of the 800 and 1,600 runs while taking third in the 400.

Reese won the javelin while claiming third in the 800 and fourth in the 1,600.

Clark Fork’s pole vaulters enjoyed a good day with Payton Milender finishing second, Bailey Milender was fifth, Molly Patko was sixth and Brooke Bibler was seventh.

Isabella Pereira was a three-time state qualifier with a third in both the long and triple jumps and a fourth in the triple jump.

Noxon’s Emily Brown was a four-time qualifier, including the javelin, 400, 800 and 1,600 runs.

Among boys athletes, St. Regis’ Caleb Ball and Andrew Sanford were both winners.

Ball stood atop the medal stand for a javelin throw of 154 feet, 8 inches. It was a personal best for Ball. Sanford won the high jump with a 6-foot leap.

Clark Fork’s Carson Callison won the long jump with a leap of 19 feet, 3 1/2 inches while Noxon’s Cade VanVleet was second in the shot put and discus. Hot Springs hurdler Kyle Lawson was a runner-up in the 300 hurdles, fourth in the 110 and third in the pole vault.

In boys team scoring, Manhattan Christian was first with 112 points. Hot Springs was fifth with 26, St. Regis was sixth with 23, Noxon was 10th with 18, Clark Fork was 13th with 15.5 and Plains was 18th with four.

For the girls, Manhattan Christian was first with 104 points while Clark Fork was third with 58. Noxon was sixth with 45.

The Class C state championships will be held at Missoula County Stadium, beginning Friday.

Here are the Class C state qualifiers, listed by team. The top seven individuals in each event and relay teams qualified from last weekend’s Western divisional at Missoula County Stadium. Complete results may be found at athletic.net.

Allen Ryan, seventh, 3,200.

Bert Detienne, fourth, 800 meters.
