NOTICE OF SALE Department of Natural Resources & Conservation Timber Sale The Upper Calico Fire Salvage Timber Sale is located within Section 16, T22N-R27W on the State's Plains Unit. Approximately 20,352 tons, consisting of mixed conifer sawlogs, are offered for sale. Sealed bids will be opened at the Department of Natural Resources & Conservation, 2705 Spurgin Road, Missoula, Montana on April 19, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. Bids may be hand delivered or mailed and will be accepted any time prior to the bid opening. DNRC recommends that bidders contact the Trust Land Management Division (406-542-4300) prior to the bid opening to ensure that your bid has been received. Bids must be accompanied by a deposit of $12,089.00, representing 5% of the minimum bid value of the sale in cashier's check, certified check, bank money order or bank draft to be applied to the first sale invoice for the successful bidder. Bid bonds will be accepted and, for the successful bidder, will be closed upon execution of the Timber Sale Contract and Timber Sale Bond. The sale will be awarded to the highest responsible bidder. If the successful bidder is unable to execute the contract within 30 calendar days from the date the sale is awarded, the bid deposit will be retained by the Department as liquidated damages. The right is reserved to reject any or all bids. Public comment needed to prioritize forest trails
The U.S. Forest Service’s Northern Region is inviting the public to help identify trails that will be part of an agency-wide effort with partners and volunteers to increase the pace of trail maintenance.

Inter-Valley Little Guy wrestlers invade Plains gym
The Plains gym was filled this weekend with Little Guy wrestlers, their parents, family, friends, coaches, officials, and spectators. There were wrestlers from 13 western Montana and north Idaho communities present, including Plains/Hot Springs, Thompson Falls, Missoula, Frenchtown, Corvallis, Clark Fork, Bonner, Hamilton, Lolo, Darby, Salmon, Stevenensville, and Florence.

Little Guy Wrestling results from Plains
Little Guy Wrestling continued in Plains last Friday and Saturday at the 2017 Intervalley Tournament. Thirteen teams joined the competition, which started on Friday at 5:30 p.m. for juniors. On Saturday, beginners and novice and middle wrestlers hit the mats.
Mail-in ballot for special election now in the House Judiciary Committee
With the special election to fill Ryan Zinke’s congressional seat just around the corner, the decision on how the election will be held is slated for March 23. Senate bill 305, which would make the election mail-ballot only, was passed Feb. 24. Now the bill is up for hearing in the House Judiciary Committee.

Superior students get 'spaced-out' with NASA project
The Superior team didn’t actually take a trip to outer space, but they did team up with NASA to get a glimpse into their operation and speak to real astronauts.

Little Guys grapple in Superior tournament
Saturday, March 11 Superior High School held a Little Guy Wrestling Qualifying Tournament. Six teams were present; Plains/Hot Springs. Frenchtown, Missoula. Clark Fork, Thompson Falls, and Bonner. Weigh-ins took place and after some warm ups the wrestlers began according to their experience; Middles started wrestling at 9 a.m., Novices began wrestling at 11 a.m. The juniors would not be wrestling at this tournament, since they will be wrestling at the Inter-Valley Tournament, which will be held in Plains on Friday, March 17 at 5 p.m. and on Saturday March 18 at 9 a.m.

Little Guy Wrestling mixer held in Plains
On Thursday, March 9, the Little Guy Wrestling mixer was held in the Plains High School gym. Junior high students from several western Montana schools (Plains, Hot Springs, Ronan, Libby, and Superior) were involved in wrestling matches on two mats. Each individual round of the match lasted one minute, 30 seconds with an “unofficial” score being kept on the time clocks at the opposite ends of the gym. Parents, coaches, friends, and other wrestlers were on hand to cheer, give support, and provide helpful suggestions to the wrestlers before, during, and after they had wrestled.

Elementary students run wild in Plains gym
On March 6, approximately 150-180 Plains Elementary students were in the gym running, hopping, and some were even throwing things. Wait, don’t be alarmed and call the school to ask what was going on there, or if anyone was hurt. It was all in good fun and part of the after school program and the Plains High School National Honor Society. The Plains gym was where this carnival took place from 4 p.m. until 5:30 p.m.

Little Guy Wrestlers hit the mats as tourneys begin
The first qualifying tournament in the Western Montana Little Guy Wrestling Program began Saturday as teams from Superior/Alberton, Plains/Hot Springs, Thompson Falls, Bonner, and Missoula hit the mats at the Superior High School.

Several truck accidents continue to hit I90 due to hazardous conditions
The Montana Highway Patrol reported 34 incidents between Feb. 26 and Mar.5, as snow and icy conditions continue to sweep down Interstate 90 in Mineral County. Several incidents occurred on Sunday, Feb. 26, and on Saturday, Mar. 4 where higher elevations were hit with heavy snow fall. Especially hazardous conditions were reported on Lookout Pass.

Two Mineral County girls basketball teams place second in Class C district basketball
On Monday, Feb. 20, both the Lady Clark Fork Mountain Cats, and the Lady St. Regis Tigers played district challenge games and won second place, each earning a spot in divisionals as a result.

Archers take aim in after-school program
Twenty-five young archers took over the Sanders County Fairgrounds Pavilion Thursday from 3:45 until 5:30 p.m. They ranged from fifth to 12th grade and were there as part of the Plains Public Schools after school program. Their instructor, Chris McGuigan, wrote the grant for the archery program.
