Bobcat boys take 8 events

The Superior boys finished in first in eight of 17 events at the 14C District Track Meet in Polson Thursday to finish in second place and send 13 boys to the divisional meet.

There were sunny skies and high temperatures at the Seeley-Swan Invitational Track Meet at Big Sky High School in Missoula Saturday and Mineral County’s track teams used them to their full advantage.

Mineral County RSVP volunteers honored at luncheon

A nice luncheon celebrating the accomplishments of the Mineral County RSVP members was held a few weeks ago. A group of 19 volunteers gathered at the River Edge Resort and were greeted with a festively decorated room, and by one another. This tight-knit group has been working side by side for years and friendships have been forged throughout that time. The program is under the direction of Mary Jo Berry, and she coordinated the event to honor their top volunteers.

The US Forest Service will hold its annual Kids Fishing Day at the Savenac Historic Tree Nursery located at Haugan on June 16. Starting at 9 a.m., with hot dogs provided by the Friends of Savenac and fishing pole and tackle available.

Emergency Planning Committee meets, adds several new members

Familiar faces with new titles were seen at the monthly Local Emergency Planning Committee meeting on July 12. Donna Richter has been named the new assistant fire chief. She is joining current Superior Fire Department Chief Steve Temple. Temple took over as fire chief from Rob Torrey earlier this year after Torrey stepped down from the position.

Local Emergency Planning Committee gears up for emergencies

The Mineral County Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) met for their monthly meeting on January 7. Tim Read, Mineral County Planner and Retired Superior Fire Chief John Woodland presented a slide show to the group regarding the freezing rain and icy roads that occurred on December 4 which resulted in closing I-90. The highway was closed for several hours, and stranded about 200 trucks in the County. The group discussed the event and came up with suggestions and strategies that would help deal with similar emergencies in the future.

SUPERIOR – Students at one Mineral County school have a better idea of what to do in case of a bear encounter after a presentation last week with an expert in the field taught them some essential knowledge on the subject.

DOT grant awarded to Superior

Last week, the Mineral County DUI Court announced that it has been awarded a $75,620 grant from the Montana Department of Transportation Highway and Traffic Safety Division for implementation of a Driving Under the Influence (D.U.I.) Court in Mineral County.  The funds will be administered through the Town of Superior with the support of Mayor Mike Wood and Brenda Schneider as Chief Financial Officer.
