Museum opens fire display

A hundred years ago, on August 20 and 21, one of the largest forest fires burned across three million acres, taking the lives of 86 individuals. Dry conditions and high winds helped to accelerate the fire, which has become known widely as The Big Burn or Big Blowup, which burned through northern Idaho and western Montana, including Mineral County.

MINERAL COUNTY - According to Forest Service authorities, the fire danger in Mineral County remains at the very high level and stage 1 restrictions remain in place. According to Forest Service Fire Prevention Officer Jim Ward, “There is no change to our drought status over the last week, the current U. S. Drought Monitor shows that we are still in extreme drought and shows impacts may be short and long term.”

Unofficial election results determine that Republican Denley Loge will face Dem. Diane Magone in the fall. Incumbent Loge beat James Mortenson with 78 percent of the vote to his challengers 22 percent. Magone was unopposed on the democratic ticket.
