Despite taking only four wrestlers, Thompson Falls/Noxon finished in eighth place at the 12-school annual Bob Kinney Classic held Saturday in Superior.

All four of the Blue Hawks grapplers were medal winners, led by individual champion freshman Trae Thilmony, adding to the team total of 70 points.

Plains/Hot Springs tied for ninth place with Glacier, each totaling 67 points. Clark Fork, the Superior-Alberton co-op, finished 11th with 52 points.

Last Thursday, Plains/Hot Springs hosted a quad in Hot Springs that also included Thompson Falls/Noxon, Arlee and Eureka. Plains/Hot Springs also competed in the Superior Mixer on Friday in Superior. There were no team scores kept in those quads.

Thilmony accounted for about half of Thompson Falls/Noxon’s team points in the Bob Kinney Classic, winning his second tourney title in just his second week of high school competition.

The Blue Hawks freshman needed only 17 seconds to pin Caleb Simpson of Cutbank and win the 112-pound class. He won by fall over all three of his opponents, including Hunter Kennedy of Cutbank in the quarterfinals, and Jacob Prescott of Florence in the semifinals.

“He’s a pretty solid wrestler,” Thompson Falls/Noxon head coach Ian Taylor said. “I’m looking forward for him doing some good things this year.”

For the Blue Hawks, Dakota Irvine earned second at 182 pounds. He was pinned by JR Seewald of Cutbank, one of the top-rated wrestlers in his class, in the finals.

Shane Reishus finished fourth at 126 pounds, and Dane Chojnacky was fourth at 160.

“They all finished in the top four. I’m happy with that,” Taylor said. “We always want to win our last match of the day and finish the tournament as high as we can … They wrestled well. They’re coming (along). They’re still pretty young and inexperienced. They’ll get better as the year goes on.”

Taylor said the other five wrestlers on the team did not make the trip to Superior.

The coach saw some good things during last Thursday’s dual at Hot Springs.

“We just went out and got some mat time,” Taylor said. “We’ve got some things for kids to work on.”

He believes Thilmony will see his toughest competition of the early season this coming weekend at the CMR (CM Russell) Classic in Great Falls, held Friday and Saturday. Five Blue Hawks wrestlers should compete in that tourney.

PLAINS/HOT SPRINGS had a trio of place winners at the Bob Kinney Classic in Superior.

Conrad Vanderwall was second at 132 pounds, and Josiah Vanderwall was runnerup at 138. Peter Carey finished by winning the third-place medal at 120.

In his title match, Conrad Vanderwall lost a 5-0 decision to Zack Morrison of Libby. Josiah Vanderwall was pinned by Dakota Flannery of Whitefish at 3:42.

Carey won his consolation finals match, pinning Kierrin Rooney of Cutbank at 3:48.

Bert DeTienne, at 145 pounds, led Caden Plasmier of Florence late in the consolation semifinals, but was turned and pinned with six seconds remaining in the match.

“I thought the effort on all of them was good,” Savage Horsemen head coach Jeff Kujala said. “I was pretty pleased. They showed some things we need to work on.”

Both Vanderwalls won their matches at the quads last Thursday and Friday, Kujala said.

CLARK FORK Mountain Cat Trey Green placed third in the 182-pound class; Isaiah Kovalsky was fourth in 145; and Wesley Buchannen also placed fourth at 132 pounds.
