Fire commemoration
One hundred years ago on August 20, the Memorial Grove site at Savenac Nursery was on fire. This past Saturday, on August 20, a crowd gathered in the grove for the rededication of the historic site and to listen as four speakers spoke an account of what happened and remembered some of the forest service's first firefighters.
Residents enjoy annual pig roast
The lawn of the Mineral County Hospital was transformed Thursday of last week into a Hawaiian Island. Hawaiian tunes filled the air and leis were dawned as well as grass skirts, flowered shirts and brightly colored pants. Tikis, coconuts, beach balls, umbrellas and palm trees set the scene for the 4th Annual Pig Roast. Residents weren't the only ones dressed up as employees and a few family members in attendance donned Hawaiian apparel.
Panthers return to football field
Football practice got underway for the teams across Mineral County last week. In Alberton, thirteen kids hit the field that will play for the Alberton Panthers this season. Coach Jake Giffin said that while the number of kids is good, he said it is lower.
Work Progressing on Dominion Creek Trestle
Work to ready the Dominion Creek Trestle and Tunnel for public use as part of the Route of the Olympian has continued over the last several weeks, with workers removing ballast boxes from the old railroad grade to prepare it for new decking. The ballast boxes were part of the original construction and were used to hold in place the dirt and gravel that made up the bed of the railroad grade. New decking, made of glue laminated timbers, will now be placed on the trestle. That work is expected to begin in early September.
'Julius Caesar' performed in Superior
Cries for Cassius and cries for Marc Antony rang out from the crowd as the two men wrestled each other, opening the theatre play Julius Caesar last Thursday night. Mark Kuntz, who played Antony, welcomed audience to the Montana Shakespeare in the Parks performance.
Hospital looking at implementing two projects
The Mineral County Hospital Board of directors have been working with a steering committee during the past year to explore the possibilities of major improvements to the facility, which, would improve patient care and increase efficiency if implemented. Last Tuesday, August 17, they held a public meeting to gather input on two proposed ideas: building a woody biomass energy system and the construction of a new hospital.

Buslayev set to appear in court at end of month
New Jersey truck driver Sergey Buslayev appeared in court last Wednesday, facing charges of negligent homicide for the death of volunteer firefighter Jerry Parrick in 2008.
Alberton Lady Panthers start vball season
The Alberton Lady Panthers are back on the court for this year's volleyball season. Practice started on Monday and Coach Rachel Clevenger said that the first game is only a couple of weeks out.
Theatre performances coming to Mineral County
Two performances are coming to Mineral County this week. On Thursday, August 19, behind the high school, Julius Caesar will be performed as part of Montana's Shakespeare in the Parks 38th Season. Then, on August 21, in the St. Regis Community Park, get ready for some Adventures on the Western Stage. Both performances are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. and are free to audiences.
Superior Bobcats back on the football field
The Superior Bobcats were back on the field on Monday and were looking forward to a new season of high school football. Dan Lucier said about 37 kids showed for the first day of practice, which is about the same number as prior years.
City council discusses pool
The local pool was an item of interest at the Superior Town Council's meeting held on Monday, August 9. Scott Anderson, from Anderson-Montgomery Consulting Engineers in Helena, presented the findings of the evaluation he performed on the pool.
Filmmaker visits Superior
Last Tuesday, August 10, Filmmaker George Sibley, who is based in Florida, was invited to attend the Mineral County Historical Society Meeting to show his film "Ordeal by Fire."

The word ‘cancer' is traditionally affiliated with suffering and loss, but on Friday night the word ‘cancer' was followed by courage, strength, defiance and life.

Mineral County Fair offers fun and memories
The Mineral County Fair was held this past week from Thursday, August 5 through Saturday, August 7, and provided an old-fashioned country fair with lots of homespun charm and cowboy spirit.
Quilt show a success
The multipurpose room and the hallways of Superior High School were draped with beautiful pieces of arts. Quilts of all colors, patterns, shapes and designs were hung throughout the school for the Cabin Fever Quilter's Show entitled "A Century of Growth," to commemorate the Fire of 1910.

Fire breaks out at bark mill
A fire broke out at the Mountain West Bark on Thursday night. Firefighters from the Superior Volunteer Fire Department responded to the fire between 7 and 8 p.m. according to Fire Chief John Woodland. Firefighters from the St. Regis Department also were out twice to assist crews with the burn. The fire was still burning at about 5 p.m. on Friday night, creating a heavy smoke in the valley.

Library wraps up summer reading programs
The summer reading program ended on Tuesday, July 27. Kids headed to Eva Horning Park for a picnic, awards and a pool party afterwards to wrap up the seven week program as well as the summer reading contest.
St. Regis football players learn new game
Football season is a long way off, but players in St. Regis took to the field last week for a short, three-day camp. The football camp ran Monday, July 26 through Wednesday, July 28 for two hours each day from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the evenings.
New principal takes office in St. Regis Schools
A new, yet old face has been selected to fill the role of St. Regis principal. Tammy Demien officially began her role as principal of the St. Regis School District this week, replacing Ed Huenemann, and while her face may be new to some, she is certainly not a stranger to the school district.
Two fires burning in Mineral County
Two fires were burning in Mineral County as of Monday morning. Bob Derleth, fire management officer for the Superior Ranger District said that both of the fires were caused by lightning strikes and were burning at less than a quarter of an acre.
Federal Way youth serve community
Thirty-three adults and youth from the Christ's Church Federal Way in Federal Way, Washington took up residence in Superior this week. Collaborating with the Superior Community Church, the group came in with a week of exciting activities planned. They helped with community projects that included roofing a home, cutting and delivering firewood, hosting a kid's vacation bible school and others.
Farmer's market up and running in Superior, Alberton
The vendors for the Superior farmer's market have the majority of the lawn in front of the old school house to set up on, but on Saturday, they all tend to gather under the tree where the shade provides relief from the hot summer sun.
Community rallies behind father
Four years ago, James Hodge's son, 16-year-old Bryan, came to live him in Superior. It was determined that Bryan had cognitive and development delays, but James embraced his son, took his developmental struggles in stride and began planning to build a life with his son. The life he planned to build with his son soon became more complicated than he could have imagined.
Woman ran over, highway patrol seeking information in hit and run
Last Tuesday evening, August 3, at around 7:30 p.m., a woman was allegedly thrown from her vehicle by another subject and then ran over by the same vehicle. The incident occurred at mile marker four, at the underpass, on Interstate 90 westbound. The name of the 45-year-old woman from the Spokane area is not yet being released as Montana Highway Patrol Trooper Richard Hader said that it could hinder their investigation.

It was all about softball for the west end of the county as the Noxon Volunteer Fire Department (NVFD) hosted their annual three-day softball tournament.

Town bands together to battle crime
HOT SPRINGS - Members of the Hot Springs community called an emergency meeting Wednesday at the Senior Center to discuss the problem of ongoing speeding, reckless driving and crime issues throughout the town.
Small cast, big visions
The Thompson Falls community theater teamed up with local actors from around the county to present The Ballad of Gopher Gap, a two-act melodrama, at the fairgrounds in Plains on Saturday night to a packed pavilion.
