There was magic in the air at the St. Regis Elementary School Theater Club's presentation of Cinderella in the school gymnasium Wednesday.

“We have lots of talent in the grade school,” said director and science teacher Chris West.

West said that this was the club's third annual performance and it consisted of actors from first through fifth grade and for the first year did not include kindergartners.

“We had a more experienced cast this year” West said.

The previous two years the club performed the Wizard of Oz and Peter Pan. Members of the cast have been practicing since Feb. 1 and for the most part had their lines down to a tee, said West.

They started out practicing once a week in February and then extended their practices to twice a week. For the two weeks prior to the performance, West said that her actors were practicing every afternoon.

The play lasted for about an hour and included 24 students from St. Regis, dressed as townspeople, mice, horses and royalty.

The play was a traditional representation of the Cinderella story, interspersed with valuable lessons. Cinderella encouraged the mice not to steal cheese, even if it was from her wicked stepmother.

The play included guest appearances from resource teacher Terri Barclay and social studies teacher Jim Martin as dancers at the grand ball.

After the play, the audience was treated to free cake and ice cream, courtesy of Jasper's Restaurant.

“They did a good job; they really worked hard,” West said. The play got a standing ovation from a gymnasium full of parents and family at its conclusion.
