Thoughts about upcoming levy
Just received the Plains Public School District’s levy election flyer. First let me say as a former teacher, I support responsible education, but I’m questioning this particular plea and may vote against it.
1. Why wasn’t this mailed at least two weeks in advance of the election so that voters could comment? When is the public meeting?
2. Is the budget available for public review? I don’t recall seeing it published in the Valley Press.
3. The photo on the cover of the flyer irks me tremendously. I realize that the students can express themselves in anyway they wish. But as a veteran, the symbol chosen is extremely offensive. It brings back vividly those images of our troops coming home to “peaceniks” spitting on them and calling them baby killers during the 1960s and ‘70s. We did the dirty work and the protesters attacked us instead of the politicians that were behind the conflict. I still consider that symbol to be the footprint of the “Great American Chicken.”
