Relay for Life Teams and other community members gathered out on the lawn beside Mullan Trail Bank in Superior Friday to enjoy the beautiful weather and make money for a good cause during their annual Lunch on the Lot event.

“I think we had a good day and it was pretty successful,” said Patti Pickering.

All six of the Relay for Life teams this year were at the event serving hot dogs, hamburgers and barbeque. One team even offered a car wash.

Pickering is a member of a team sponsored by the Cabin Fever Quilt Guild and she said her team usually raises enough money to be within the top two teams every year this event takes place.

“My goal is to bring cancer awareness to the community, because we need it,” Pickering said.

Pickering, who has been involved with Relay for Life for seven years, said that this is the fifth year they have had the Lunch on the Lot event and it usually draws a crowd. She estimated that around 120 people showed up to eat lunch.

Some teams were even running out of food.

All of the money raised during the event is collected by the individual teams who then participate in the Relay for Life event on Aug. 8 and donate all the money they have raised. The money goes to the American Caner Society.

Teams can have as many as 15 people, and they are encouraged to raise at least $100 for each team member.

The only rule at the Relay for Life event is that during the festivities one member of each team must be walking or running on the track at all times during the 24-hour event.

Individuals that raise more money than the suggested $100 can be eligible for incentive prizes like jackets, a tent or even an MP3 player.

This is the second event held by the Relay for Life teams. They had a kick-off event on April 24 to get people excited about Relay for Life.

Pickering, whose eight member team sold fruit cups and auctioned off a hand-made wall-hanger, said that the event is really helpful to groups because it allows them an opportunity to raise a great deal o money in a short period of time.

Anyone interested in joining the Relay for Life can still create a team.

“It’s never too late to join up,” said Pickering.

Those interested in volunteering can attend the final committee meeting at the Assembly of God Church at 6:30 p.m. July 29, or contact Pickering at 822-7425. Those interested in starting a team can also contact Donna Chambers in Superior at 822-4050, or Terri Barclay in St. Regis at 214-1985.
