$700,000,000 for your vote, please

| November 12, 2008 12:00 AM

Well, now we know what $700,000,000.00 can buy.

1) The national media; lock, stock and barrel.

2) The ability to dissect populations of towns, cities, all 3141 counties, and states by race, religion, occupation, unemployment, education, and past voting histories.

3) The ability to pander to and pound those populations deemed most important to win over, repeatedly.

4) The ability to purchase and refurbish your own 757 and supply it with seemingly unlimited barrels of aviation fuel.

5) The ability to eke out that important 4 percent of popular vote and the necessary Electoral College votes.

I remember in early summer when Democratic primary candidate Clinton revealed she had already invested nearly $40,000,000.00 in the primary race. At the time I thought that was an incredible and ridiculous amount of money spent to garner votes for the prospect of getting to run for the presidency of our country. Senator Obama has spent an appalling seventeen and a half times that amount which leads me to wonder how anyone else could ever afford to attempt to bring about the change that might be necessary four years from now. After all, he certainly owes more to his backers than he can ever afford to repay. That is, assuming he doesn’t choose to use the taxpayers to bail out the rich again.

While I admit that I am not a learned student of the Constitution of the United States, I have some knowledge of it and utmost respect for it.¬Ý Likewise, I have an unflinching and utter respect for the wisdom of our founding fathers. However, those wise men could not have foreseen anything like what we have endured in this over-long election process. The chasing of the Electoral College votes was so minutely planned and executed, perhaps it is time to revisit the system and let the popular vote rule.

Certainly this would open a can of worms; one would wonder what else would be altered in the Constitution, along this path. However, when one looks at the recent history of how it is has been repeatedly ignored by those who swear to uphold this wonderful document, maybe it is time for the people to elect the change that would indeed serve the populace.

What do you think? Do you want to see another 22 month, or longer, election process again? Do you want to be inundated with propaganda for half of your life? Do you want to continue to see our economy and our lives be manipulated by those who wish to rule us? Not I.¬Ý

Some things definitely need change and, I believe, the election process is one place to start.

Sincerely,

Judy Woolley,
