Savage Horsemen win

The field in Hot Springs was good to the Savage Horsemen Friday night as they beat the Deer Lodge Wardens 36-0.

The excited crowd packed the stands and some adventurous ones even sat on top of school buses.

Plains-Hot Springs came out swinging as they scored two touchdowns in the first quarter. The first was a 12-yard pass from Reiley Winebrenner to Brian Green, with a Carson Lilja kick.

The second touchdown of the quarter came from a 13-yard run by Cody Hoff with another Lilja extra point.

Lilja got some use of his foot as he had three field goals, two of which came in the second quarter. He had an 18-yard field goal along with a 38-yard and a 27-yard for the game.

In the third quarter it took a while for either team to get into their momentum and it wasn’t until there was 1:17 left on the clock that Mitch Thompson was able to power it in for a 3-yard run. Lilja’s extra point kick was good.

Eight seconds into the fourth quarter, the Savage Horsemen intercepted the ball and took over on their own 15-yard line. Despite their best efforts, they couldn’t power it in for a touchdown and had to settle for three from Lilja instead. Lilja’s 27-yard field goal brought the score was brought to 30-0.

As if a 30-0 shutout wouldn’t have been bad enough, Trent Thompson caught a pass from Winebrenner to run it into the end zone with 5:19 left in the game. Lilja’s extra point attempt was blocked, giving the Savage Horsemen a 36-0 lead and the last points of the game.

Mitch Thompson led the Savage Horsemen with 102 rushing yards. Winebrenner threw two touchdown passes and Dillon Fryxell had three punt returns for 98 yards and an interception. His longest punt return was 52-yards.

The win brings the Savage Horsemen to 2-5 overall.

“We came out ready to play,” Pettit said. “We’ve had some bad luck this season, but we never stopped working and it definitely showed Friday night.”
