The Superior Lady Bobcats Volleyball Team has spent the past nearly two weeks working hard to get ready for their first game coming up this Friday afternoon.

“We’re feeling pretty confident right now,” head coach Diane Woodard said.

The team started practicing on Aug. 18 and their first game will be at home against Valley Christian.

Woodard said that right now she has 27 girls between her varsity and junior varsity teams and they are all playing very strong in practice. She added that there may be two more volleyball players transferring in this year and she expects the team to only get stronger as the season progresses.

Last year the team had a 6 – 8 record, a vast improvement over the previous year in which they did not win a single game. Woodard started coaching the team last year and she said that she hopes to only see them improve.

This year Woodard also has the help of assistant coach Kinsey Cox. Woodard said that Cox has played collegiate volleyball and she has been a great asset to the team so far.

Woodard said that the varsity team’s biggest asset this year is their four seniors Sammi Woodard, Alex Conrow, Tara Bower and Kaila Smith and that their experience would be a huge boost for the team.

The varsity team this year will also include freshman Caitlyn Koke, who Woodard said has been doing very well in practice.

Woodard said that the Lady Bobcats have had an exceptional freshman class come in this year and she is excited to see them improve over the coming season.

“We just going to continue to try to improve all of those younger girls and continue to work on all of their skills,” Woodard said.

This summer many of the volleyball players for Superior participated in a volleyball camp in July that focused on building individual skills in the game.

Woodard said that after the camp the top ten girls took part in another camp in August at St. Mary’s where they played as many tournaments in one weekend as they would in half of a season.

Woodard said that she could not attend the August camp because regulations forbid her from watching her players compete after Aug. 1, but she heard that they did well and she is ready for them to get to apply some of the new skills they have learned.
