Friday night was the first game for the Superior Bobcats Varsity Football team and they showed their mettle with a solid victory over Charlo Vikings.

“We did really good for the first night,” said Bobcats’ head coach Dan Lucier.

The Bobcats finished off Friday night’s game with a decisive 36 to 6 victory of the Vikings, not giving up a single touchdown there were only seven minutes left in the final quarter of the game.

The evening got off to a slow start however with neither team managing to score a single touchdown in the first quarter.

In the second quarter the Bobcats managed to push close to the end zone but they could not break through for a touchdown. With less than six minutes left in the quarter senior Yim Sribenjakul kicked a field goal for the first three points in the game.

After an interception that put the Bobcats on the 30-yard line, quarterback Tyler Stenberg ran the ball to within six inches of the end zone, setting the Bobcats up for their first touchdown of the night run in by Drew Walen with less than three minutes left in the second quarter.

Sribenjakul missed his kick and the Bobcats finished out the second quarter in the lead 9 to 0.

“We got the bugs worked out in the first half so we could really settle down and concentrate,” said Lucier.

While still holding the Vikings scoreless with a strong defensive line the Bobcats pushed their way to another touchdown run in by Walen with less than nine minutes left in the third quarter. The Vikings kept the Bobcats from running the ball in for a conversion and held Superior to a 15 to 0 lead.

After a strong display from the Bobcats defense Superior managed to score another touchdown with less than seven minutes to go in the quarter. With a successful kick from Sribenjakul they stretched their lead by another seven points to 22 to 0 and held the Vikings scoreless for the rest of the quarter.

Less than two minutes into the fourth quarter Walen ran in another touchdown and brought the Bobcats score up to 29 after a successful kick.

Not to go out without scoring a single touchdown, sophomore Viking Chico Stipe stripped the ball from the Bobcats and the Vikings managed their first touchdown with less than seven minutes to go in the fourth quarter. The Vikings missed their attempt to run the ball in and the score stood at 29 to 6.

With five minutes left in the fourth quarter the Bobcats recovered a fumble and pushed in for a final touchdown and successful kick, finishing off the game with a 36 to 6 victory.

“They all did really well at times,” said Lucier about his team’s first game.

He said that their strong defense and relentless offense really came through and helped them keep the Vikings from scoring most of the game.

“We just kept attacking. Our game plan was to just keep coming after them,” Lucier said.

Lucier said that although he thought they played well for their first game, there was plenty for the team to work on before they are playing at their full potential.

“We’re going to work on everything. We did pretty good but with stuff like tackling we weren’t as strong as we could have been,” Lucier said.

He said that Travis Stroot really came through for the team as a quarterback and Brian Labbe did an excellent job leading the defensive line.

“Drew Walen ran the ball really well tonight,” Lucier added.
