The St. Regis golf team has been underway in practice, despite some not so ideal weather.

“The weather hasn’t been great,” head coach Dan Park said. “It is definitely not quite spring yet.”

Because of the weather the team has been forced to work mainly on fundamentals and going over the rules of the game.

“The course hasn’t really been open to play yet, because of the weather,” Park said. “We can’t go out and shoot for scores yet.”

Park said that he has a total of 15 players on the team, with eight boys and seven girls, which is a little down than from years past.

“This is about the number I end up with by the middle of the season once people decide whether or not they want to play in the cold,” Park said with a laugh. “But I usually have more interest at the start.”

Park said he will be taking four golfers to the tournament in Missoula this Friday and Saturday.

“I’d probably have more go, but it is a little difficult with this being spring break and all,” he said.

The three boys that are going are Zane Worrall, Cody Roper and Willy Roper. All three of which were qualifiers for state last year.

Dallas Ward is the sole female going to the tournament and she placed in the top three at the state meet last year.

Park is hopeful that he’ll be able to take four boys and four girls to the state meet this year, which for Class C is the limit.

“Since I can only take four then I’m hoping to get four,” he said. “I’m sure Zane, Cody and Willy will all make it again and I’ve got some promising kids that can come along and fill that fourth spot for me.”

Park said that Ward will definitely make it to the state meet again and he already has in mind another girl that should also be able to make it.

“I’m sure that I can get at least three girls to qualify to state,” he said.

As for the rest of the season, Park said that a change in weather would be very much appreciated.

“It would be nice if it would warm up and be like golf weather,” he said. “We always have high hopes for the season and I think we’re going to have a good one.”
