Does light display have to become an issue?

| December 24, 2009 12:00 AM

I read with interest the letter submitted by Lark Chadwick of Thompson Falls regarding the star on the tree at the fairgrounds in the lovely light display.

Really, is this an issue which warrants a letter? These folks take the time and effort to put up a beautiful display year after year that contains many references to our Lord throughout the display. Is the placement of the star all you came away with after your drive through there? How sad for you. I would imagine if you knew the people who put up the light display you would know this was not intended to offend or to be “blasphemous” in any way. Considering no one had complained before this time indicates it not to be a blatant form of disrespect. If you want to concern yourself with an issue addressing the public good, why not consider starting with the fact that this county has the highest unemployment rate in the entire State of Montana? What about your neighbor who is unemployed and cannot make his/her house payment? Or the neighbor who cannot even afford groceries for the weeks ahead? Maybe the 200 well meaning “reverent residents” you so boldly mention could donate the $200.00 you want to collect to the local food bank to assist the county residents who are in need.

Clearly, your priorities are much different than most. I only hope that your criticism and legalistic view has not ruined the prospect of future light displays for the rest of the people who enjoy them. In the loving spirit of Christmas.
