The Noxon Lady Red Devils were able to hang on for the District 14-C win at Superior Saturday night, after the Lady Bobcats garnered a rush of momentum at the end of the game.
The Noxon Lady Red Devils led by as many as 17 points, before going into the fourth quarter. With just under three minutes left in the fourth quarter Superior cut its deficit to just four bringing the score to 42-38. However, the Lady Red Devils were able to continue their strong play, as they never let the Bobcats get any closer than that.
In the first quarter Superior took an early 11-9 lead, and were able to keep it close in the second quarter, even as Noxon scored 14 points to Superior’s 10. However, the Lady Red Devils came out swinging after the half. Noxon scored 19 points in the third quarter and their oppressive full court defense was able to hold Superior to just four points in the eight minute quarter, giving Noxon a 16-point lead to go into the fourth quarter.
The Lady Bobcats weren’t going to give up without a fight though as they scored 20 points in the fourth quarter and held Noxon to just seven.
With the win, Noxon improved to 2-0 in district play and 4-4 in overall play. Rachel Stetler was the lead scorer with 14 points, six of which came in the third quarter. Lindsey Franz had 13 points, Chandler Wilkinson had 10, Cara Stetler had five, Stephanie Larkin had three and Kira Marlich and Shelby Swant each had two points.
Noxon Head Coach Ashley Hannum said that she has been really proud of her team so far this season. “It has definitely been a transition for them, with a new coach and all,” she said. “But I have to say that they’re doing great, I’ve been so happy with their attitudes and their game.”
Hannum said she was especially impressed with how her team didn’t give up, especially after the Bobcats made a run in the fourth quarter bringing the game to within four points.
“They never gave up and never quit,” Hannum said. “They played a hard game all the way up until the final seconds, and I just couldn’t ask for any more from them,” she said.
