The Plains cheerleaders handed out their cakes again on Jan. 16. At every home game the girls bake a cake, patrons can get tickets to win them for a dollar throughout the week, then at the game the decorative edible pieces of art of given to the winners. This week though was a little special, on top of the sweets they provided they brought in the National Guard to give prizes out to kids.
At half time the court flooded with tiny feet and horrendous grunts all attempting to make a basket and win a prize from one of the boxes.
Sergeant First Class Syme, the local National Guard Recruiter, got together with Susie Von Meter, cheerleading coach, to get the event rolling.
“She just came in to the circle and had lunch one day and we started talking,” Von Meter said.
Her latest recruit Specialist Seth Pettit accompanied Syme. They gave away everything from small basketballs, footballs and water bottles. The kids could not get enough.
“We were just doing something fun with the cheerleaders,” Syme said, “We want to be out and be a part of the community.”
Von Meter said that probably about 40 to 50 kids participated in the fun, and the National Guard donated it all.
“It was awesome, it was perfect,” Von Meter said, “They gave away some really nice prizes.”
