The public is invited to join two Mineral County Challenge Work Groups meetings.

The Restoration/Wood Products Work Group will have its first meeting 6:00–9:30 pm next Tuesday, July21 at St. Regis Community Center. Greg Jones of the Rocky Mountain Research Station will give a brief presentation about the forest products industry economy in Mineral County, and Tim Love, District Ranger from the Seeley Lake Ranger District will discuss stewardship contracting in that district. Participants will also discuss the opportunities for, and barriers to, strengthening the forest products industry while sustaining environmental quality.

The Recreation/Tourism Work Group will meet 6:00–9:30 pm Thursday July 23 at Savenac Nursery. The group will talk about the private and public Recreation/Tourism sector, with presentations by MFWP and U.S. Forest Service. Participants will discuss the opportunities for, and barriers to, creating tourism economy opportunities while sustaining environmental quality. Please call the number below if you are planning to attend.

The Amenity/Creative Economy Work Group met on June 30 and changed its name to the Best Community Economy Work Group. The “Best Community” refers to a new movement of creative and knowledgeable people to the best communities that offer the most pleasant or agreeable qualities (i.e., amenities). Communities in scenic areas have an advantage in attracting knowledgeable and creative workers by increasing quality-of-life amenities, which are becoming increasingly important in worker location choices.

The next Best Community Economy Work Group meeting will take place 6:00 to 9:30 pm September 9 at Alberton Town Hall.

The Mineral County Challenge is an active planning and collaboration process that will result in a handful of economic development strategies selected by local stakeholders, evaluated by researchers, and supported by natural resource managers. All Mineral County residents and business owners are welcome to join these work groups.
