The Trotters softball team keeps up its late season push by splitting a doubleheader with Noxon on Tuesday at Plains. Along with being filled by late-game performers the team is also coming around late in the season.
It took the Trotters six games to achieve their first game and and they stayed at the one-win mark 13 games into the season. Now, the girls have two wins in their last five games.
Plains took care of Noxon in the first game of the double header 4-5. Karlena Heward threw a complete game, striking out two and allowing seven hits.
Plains was outhit in the contest 5-7, but Heward was able to scatter the hits to prevent any large rallies and the Trotters were able to push Noxon’s pitching staff to give up seven walks in the game. Two of the walks came home to score, which ended up being the final difference.
Heward pounded the strike zone the whole day not giving up any walks. She only pitched three balls to any one batter once and finished the day throwing 49 strikes to only 17 balls for nearly a 3-to-1 ratio.
Offensively, Heward and Gina Morigeau both came through with runners on base to post rbi’s in the game. Emily Morigeau, Samantha Buchanan and Brittany Spencer also had hits in the game.
Noxon got revenge in the second game winning 10-5 behind a six run first inning. It is a typical story for the Trotters who in losing efforts routinely fall behind in the first inning and play behind for the rest of the game.
It was a much better game for the Trotters as they posted eight hits, highlighted by Keaton Jones going two for four with a double. Spencer also came through big in the fourth inning with a two-run single.
Noxon had ten hits in the game including a two-run homerun in the second inning by Shelby Swant. Swant brought some power for the second game going 3-3 sandwiching her homerun with a double and a single.
Noxon score the ten runs on ten hits. Heward pitched her second consecutive complete game. She threw 79 pitches in the second game and proved to be a warrior on the mound as she threw a combined 149 pitches in the two games.
