Plains volleyball looking better than expected

The Trotters performed better than head coach Jessica Cahala could have hoped for at their first tournament this past Saturday. The team faced five of their conference rivals in Drummond, in a 16 game long tournament. Although they didn't play full matches, the team got fourth out of fifth place and put up a tough fight the whole time.

“We played competitive with all of them so I was very proud of them,” said Cahala.

Cahala played an eight-person team on Saturday which is a really small team for volleyball games. Only eight players partook in the games Saturday because there are a few girls out with injuries and some girls have not made it to enough practices to start playing in games. Six sophomores and two seniors played on Saturday giving many of the girls their first Varsity experience.

“I didn't expect as much as what I saw on Saturday,” said Cahala.

Cahala said the there is still a lot of room for improvements but she sees a lot of growth happening every single practice. She also said she sees the team peaking right in the middle of the season which is exactly where the team wants to be at this point in the season. There are no major places Cahala can see that the team needs to improve on, but rather the little things need to be worked on that will really make everything click together.

The team's biggest strength is working together and showing what the word teamwork means.

“That's our biggest strength as a team we play really really well together as a team,” said Cahala.

As far as the competition goes, Cahala said confidently that everyone she saw on Saturday is beatable and that “there is nobody out there that I've seen so far that is amazing.”

The outstanding player of the game was sophomore Diamond LaDeaux. Cahala said she really surprised the team and played “really really well.”

Plains volleyball girls are showing a lot of promise this season. The Trotters played Tuesday September 1 against Mission Tourney and play Saturday September 5 at 3:00 against Eureka. Check next week's paper for more season updates.
