Plains volleyball girls did not let the fair slow them down in their match against Eureka this past Saturday.

The first game kicked off in a back and forth battle between the two teams with the Lady Trotters starting off the match with a 25-23 win. Eureka ended up winning the four game match, but the Trotters put up a fight throughout the entire game.

The second and third games went to Eureka with a score of 15-25 and 12-25. Although Eureka seemed to be taking the match for an easy win in the third game, Plains picked it back up and fought until the finish with a close game of 23-25.

“No one expected us to do anything because Eureka is such a big school, and it’s nice that we played so well,” said head coach Jessica Cahala.

Cahala said the best part about the way the team played on Saturday was that everyone contributed something, with stats all across the board for the girls. Kayla Revier and Lacey Hermiston led the group with three aces each, but Nikki Kunzer, Diamond LaDeaux and Kylee Knudson had an ace each. The stats are spread all over the board with each girl contributing strengths in many different areas throughout the game.

“Our middle hitters all blocked really, really well,” said Cahala.

There were six girls who had kills on the team, Revier leading with four, Hermiston, Kunzer and LaDeaux each had three kills. Laurel Danhoff also had two kills and Heather Earhart rounded the team off with one kill. Earhart and Kunzer had six set-assists each.

“They (Earhart and Kunzer) are our two setters, and for them to be that evenly matched is really appreciated,” said Cahala.

Despite the loss, the Trotters are very strong when it comes to teamwork, which is only going to make them stronger as the season progresses. Cahala said her focus for practices right now is just working on the details and tightening up a few areas, however, she was extremely pleased by the girls’ performance in their match against Eureka.

“They have team unity, spirit and are hardworkers, they have just so much going for them this year that now it’s just tying up loose ends.”

The Trotters next match is set for Saturday September 12 against Superior. The Thursday September 10 game against Big Fork has been rescheduled for September 28.
