County Community Development meeting wrap

| September 30, 2009 12:00 AM

Sanders County Community Development Corporation met on Tuesday, September 22nd in Hot Springs. The board approved the budget which included stronger financial support from the county.

Director Ray Marshall reported some statistics from the Montana Economic Developers Association (MEDA) meetings in Libby on September 15th. Montana is second in the nation for economic development activities. Michigan was number one. Montana and North Dakota are the only two states with a surplus instead of a deficit. Montana is the 11th lowest in the nation for state and local tax burden on businesses. In short, the business climate in Montana is very good compared to other states.

The meetings focused on renewable energy including hog fuel from the forests, wind and hydro power.

Marshall reported a slowing of inquiries for assistance at the SCCDC office. Other MEDA members had confirmed that activities had slowed.

A group from Heron presented plans for a senior complex which will include a community center, housing for independent living, and assisted living. Noting the influx of many seniors into the county, the group feels that a senior complex would be in order. The board voted to give support to the group.

The Hot Springs Clinic was discussed. Various avenues are being examined to help get monies for that project.

The board discussed the phasing in of a new part time director. They hope to fill the position by the first of the year. Ray Marshall will be phasing out of the position but will help in the transitioning period and continue to serve on the board.

The board has two new members appointed in July. Howard Bakke is from the Noxon area and was formerly self-employed. Stan Richardson owns Computer Logic and is a member of the Plains Chamber of Commerce.

The board has one board position open and is seeking people interested in serving on the board. Applicants should be interested in the overall business climate of Sanders County and willing to attend a once a month meeting which is generally on the third Tuesday of the month.
