Obituaries for William Evans

| September 30, 2009 12:00 AM

William (Bill) Evans passed away September 21, 2009. He was born in Rocky Comfort, MO in 1926. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII, and was a disabled veteran. He moved to California after being honorably discharged from the service, and lived in various towns in the San Joaquin Valley. He worked in the orange groves, packing sheds, and on milk farms. In the 1950’s he moved to McKinleyville in Humboldt County, and worked in the lumber industry, and owned his own garage with his brothers. He moved to Saltese, Montana in 1970, and worked for the State of Montana, building the new freeway on Lookout Pass. He owned his own gas station and garage for several years before retiring.

Bill was a jack of all trades and a master at most. He built a saw mill out of an old car engine, cut down timber from his property, and built a home all from lumber he sawed using his saw mill. He worked with leather and made many wallets, purses, and belts for friends and relatives. He liked working with rocks and stones, cutting, polishing, and making jewelry, and other items.

He was a John Deere fan and loved doing all kinds of work with his tractor and old caterpillar, which are fondly referred to as “his toys.” He loved hunting and fishing. The catfish can now rest easy.

He is survived by his brother Lue Evans of Pinehurst, Montana, sisters Margie Scott of Oroville, California, Elma Conway of LaPine, Oregon, Wilma Harvey of Redding, California and Pauline Erickson of Palo Cedro, California, stepdaughters Mary Wood of Sierra Vista, Arizona, Lana Smith and Patty Lindsay of McKinleyville, California, numerous nieces, nephews, and grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Maxine, his parents, Jasper and Yula Evans, brothers Clive, Gene and Walter Evans, stepson James Michael Lindsay, stepdaughter Leisa Renee Lindsay, and great-grandson William Toby Dare.
