Thompson Falls market finishes with cinnamon roll contest

| September 30, 2009 12:00 AM

The sun was shining. The hot coffee was steaming. And over one hundred people visited the Thompson Falls Market to hear who the judges chose as the person who bakes the best cinnamon rolls at the Cinnamon Roll Challenge.

The judges included Ray Marshall, Carla Parks, Pat Ingraham, Bruce Laube and Justin Harlan. “This was a tough task, but someone had to do it,”commented Ray Marshall. The judges reviewed appearance, taste and texture, and creativity of thirteen different cinnamon rolls. Competitors submitted apple, chocolate, whole wheat, old fashion, some with nuts others with raisins. “The variety was amazing, and each one offered something different to taste,”shared Bruce Laube.

The final day of the market featured sixteen vendors selling produce, eggs, art, crafts and baked goods. “The best part of the day was seeing so many friends and neighbors spending time soaking in the sun, touching base and voting on the ‘people’s choice’ cinnamon rolls,” said Katrina Wright, market manager. “That’s the whole point of the market, bringing community together.”

The winners were:

People’s Choice went to Helen Johnson, $5.00 in market money

5th place Diane Laube, free entry into 2010 cinnamon roll challenge

4th place Helen Johnson, $10 cash

3rd place Lisa Beachy, $20 cash

2nd place Peggy Nelson, $30 cash
