It was a big weekend for the Thompson Falls boys as they traveled down to Big Sky High School on Saturday to meet up with a highly competitive field and came away with a second place trophy.

The boys placed second at the meet behind Corvallis, the defending Class A champion, not a bad team to lose to says Assistant Coach Randy Roberts.

"To get second to those guys is pretty good."

The boys did it by strong performances from two personal records from senior Ryan Humphrey in both the 1600, 4:41.12, and 3200 run,10:25.9. He placed fifth in the 1600 and fourth in the 3200.

"I think he's coming along really well. He improves every time he comes out," says Roberts.

Along with Humphrey the team benefited from strong showings by fellow seniors Will Dalby and Mike Wood in the javelin, Steve Block in the pole vault and Charlie Knapp in the three jumping events. All four of those seniors also received invitations to the Top 10 meet in Missoula on Tuesday in the aforementioned events.

At the Seeley Invite on Saturday Dalby placed second and Wood followed him with third place in the javelin. Block placed second in the pole vault by clearing 12-6 and Knapp placed third in the triple and high jump and second in the long jump. Challis Wilson also placed second in the high jump.

The strong placing by the boys in such a large and competitive meet can be a really positive sign for things to come in the district, divisional and state meets, but Assistant Coach Roberts is careful not too get too optimistic.

"You never know with that. We've been here before and things didn't work out. You need things to go your way at the right time," says Roberts.

On the girls' side, senior Beca Gunderson continues to come on strong especially in the 800 run. Roberts, who coaches the long distance runners on the team estimates that Gunderson is further along then where she was at this time of the year last season.

This next weekend the team will be traveling to Whitefish on Saturday for another highly competitive meet that will also feature some new competition with Eastern squads from the Hi-Line making it to Whitefish to compete.

For the coaching staff, Roberts says they will continue to fine tune everything in practice and work on conditioning with an eye at having the kids peak right before Districts.
