The building that served as the old post office in DeBorgia now has a new purpose serving as the small community’s library, the DeBorgia/ Cooper Library. And though it is small in size, it is serving a large role in the town. There’s also no shortage of books. From romance to Louis L’amour, with self-help and plenty of fiction to choose from, the newly opened library is sure to become a popular spot for those seeking a good read.

“We have a pretty good selection,” said Librarian Marilyn Wood.

Wood is excited for the little library and thinks that it is nice that the community has access to a library that is nice and close to its residents on the West End.

“I think it’s pretty neat,” said Wood. “We’ve never had a library before. Everybody I’ve met likes to read.”

The building was built by locals and Wood already has big plans for the library and its space. Right now, book shelves in the middle of the building hold the books, but Wood would like to see shelves built around the walls, opening up the space in the middle of the building.

“We just really opened back on Nov. 20 so we’re still working on getting it stocked. Every book has been donated that we have in here,” Wood said.

Wood said that once the library gets up and going she wants to start holding some programs for kids in the community.

“Kids seems to be having problems reading and don’t do well so I thought that maybe on Saturday mornings we could have a group get together and kids could come in and we could help them pick a book that is age appropriate to read,” Wood said.

Wood expressed that she’d like the group to sit down in a circle and each child could read a sentence or two before passing it on to the next child in line.

“I think it’s more fun that way,” Wood said.

With coffee available as well and Elmo reading in the corner, visitors to the library are sure to have a good time. Wood said that they’ve had a few people come by. Last Friday, during the Cooper Tree Lighting, those who attended were also able to walk through the library and take a look at what it has to offer.

Wood said that anyone is welcome to stop by during the library’s hours. Library hours are 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. The library is open from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesdays. This is a sharing library, borrow books, bring books and return books so all may enjoy. The library is on the Old Schoolhouse grounds in Deborgia and is part of the Deborgia Historic Schoolhouse Foundation.
