With the stand microphone not working, Mary Johnston held the wireless mike for performer Pilar Cantrell-Field on Saturday as she shared her talent with the audience.

It was a small show, but it was packed full of talent. The St. Regis Ski-Snowboard Club held a talent show last Saturday for the community to raise funds for a trip that they are planning.

Host Raymond White took the stage and found himself looking for his sidekick Jeran Jennings, who was standing right next to him.

Since the audience got to vote for the winners, Raymond put in a plug for himself and Jeran.

“Please vote for us,” he asked.

Zianna King was up first and sang a song that she wrote about nature. The lyrics were describing the world of nature around us and different types of nature.

“I dream day and night about you even though you’re right outside,” King sang. “…mountains bid good morning.”

King then teamed up with Lauryn Lowry to sing Feliz Navidad and also with Payton Green to sing Jingle Bells. The audience ended up awarding first place to King for her song about nature in the kindergarten through sixth grade division of the talent show.

Next up, Tawny Jennings had to deal with some technical difficulties before performing Taylor’s Swift, “I Love Heart Question Mark.”

Pilar Cantrell-Field gave the audience a great performance. With the stand microphone not working, Mary Johnston held the microphone for Pilar while she sang Swift’s “Mine” and played guitar.

The St. Rejects (Brandyn Jones, Thomas Spencer and Juliana Spencer) took the stage next and played a grungy rock song, “Heart Shaped Box.” The band also treated the audience to a soul-filled Christmas song. Jones had to duck out on the second song as he broke a guitar string.

The audience ended up voting the St. Rejects as the winners for the upper age division. During the voting, the audience had fun watching some improvisational skits.

Amber Faulkner, who is the new math teacher at St. Regis, is also acting as the Ski-Snowboard’s club advisor. She commended the kids who work hard in and out of school.

The talent show is one of the group’s first fundraisers to raise money for a trip that they hope to take in February to the Great Divide.

“Talent shows had been done in the past and so we decided to go with it,” Faulkner said. “We thought it would be different outside of a bake sale as well as a fun way to get people in.”

The purpose of the club as Faulkner put it is a “good way for students to meet outside of school.”

“These students are very goal-based and we’re talking about what we want to do and where we want to go,” Faulkner said.

Faulkner said that there are about 14 kids that have been attending the meetings and more are certainly welcome to participate. She said that she hopes it might fill a gap as well.

“There are some kids here that weren’t into school sports or they are not into music. I thought we could get that reached out to some other,” Faulkner said.

She added that they have been meeting once a week and hope to expand in the years to come.

“Looking ahead, we want to do some stuff in the community and continue building each year,” Faulkner said. “We’ve talked about getting some boxes and rails put up locally for maybe some park riding and tie it to skateboarding.”

Though the club is in its pilot year, Faulkner said that the kids are excited as is she and they are looking forward to what’s ahead.
