Bobcats win at home

The Superior boys nabbed a victory last week when they played Darby at home on Tuesday.

The Bobcats jumped out to a narrow lead in the first quarter, 12-11. They took the lead in the second as well, outscoring Darby 11-6. They led 23-17 at halftime. Despite the early lead, Coach Bajin Smith said that the boys started out behind before things turned around.

“We started down about seven points, but then our defense settled down a bit,” Smith said. “(Darby’s) got some good shooters and some great athletes. They have some pretty good shooters that work from the outside, but our defense stayed with them.”

Darby threatened in the third quarter a bit, outscoring Superior 19-15, but it still wasn’t enough to take hold of the lead. Superior came out in the fourth quarter to outscore them 16-12 and took the game win by five points, 53-48.

“Our offense is starting to come around. We struggled a bit on defense, but they’re stepping up too,” Smith said.

RJ Frederick scored 22 points for the Bobcats against Darby.

“He had an awesome game,” Smith noted.

Aaron Lowman also proved to be a force. He was sent to the foul line 38 times and made 19 of the attempts. He also added 10 points for the team. Smith said that the junior-varsity squad also won their game against Darby.

After the win, Superior played Troy on Saturday. Smith said that the game didn’t go too bad, noting the long road trip beforehand.

“We started out strong in the first and second quarters,” Smith said. “Our defense was pretty solid and our offense was working good, but they have a solid team up there.”

The Bobcats were behind 20-25 going into halftime. In the third quarter, Troy guard Cody Orr scored a critical seven points that eventually proved to secure the lead.

“We seemed to be flat on offense in the second half and struggled,” Smith said. “We ended up losing by 19 points, but they showed a lot of promise and worked hard.”

Lowman led with 13 points, Frederick scored six as did Tanner Coon, Adam Kay scored four and Billy Smith added two.

The Bobcats have Arlee on Tuesday.

“They’re real tough and have some great shooters,” Smith said. “Their defense is a bit weak, but they run the floor well.”

The boys will also battle Florence on Wednesday and Smith anticipates it will also be a tough matchup.

“We’re going to have to run a stifling defense against both Arlee and Florence,” he said. “We’ll have to slow the pace down as much as we can and be real patient on our offensive work.”
