Alberton boys wrestle with Frenchtown team

| February 4, 2010 12:00 AM

Alberton might not have a wrestling team at their own school, but that doesn’t stop three high schoolers from joining the Frenchtown team on the mat. Cody Ishler, Roy Schutter and Jacob Bestwick all wrestlers from Mineral County, travel over the county line to wrestle on Frenchtown’s team. Bob Henderson, who coaches the Broncs, said that he enjoys having them as part of the squad.

“I haven’t been disappointed with them in the least. They contribute a lot to the team and bring great attitudes with them,” he said. “It’s great having them.”

Ishler is a returning state champion, winning at state last year at 98 pounds as a freshman. This year, he’s wrestling at 112 pounds and Henderson said he is doing well and had a record of 30-5.

“It’s a good class for him. It might be tough to repeat what happened last year, but Cody’s a gamer. He’s one that rises to the occasion,” he said. “Hopefully, he’ll be able to get in the right frame of mind and do well in divisionals and at state in Billings as well.”

Roy Schutter wrestles at 98 pounds and is also a returning wrestler. Henderson said that Schutter has improved immensely and he’s hoping to see him do well in divisionals and hopefully secure some wins. His record this year so far is 18-7.

For Jacob Bestwick, it’s his first year with the team at Frenchtown and Henderson said it’s been great to have him out on the mat.

“He’s a solid kid and we’re just looking for him to improve during this first year and to hang in there while he learns,” Henderson said. “That’s all you can really ask out of a first-year wrestler. But he’s a great kid to have on the mat.”

Henderson is hoping that the boys will do well at divisionals and be able to qualify for state.
