Master Gardener program headed to Hot Springs

| January 6, 2010 12:00 AM

Montana State University Extension Flathead Reservation & Sanders County will be offering the “Master Gardener” program at the Tribal Senior Citizens Building in Hot Springs beginning Wednesday, February 3 and finishing March 31, 2010. Classes will be held on eight consecutive Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

“Master Gardener” is a term many people are familiar with. Master Gardening began in Washington State in 1972, with graduates volunteering their time at local extension offices answering a very wide array of horticultural-related questions. “Master Gardener” type programs are now offered in all 50 states. Montana State University, through State Horticulturist Toby Day has revised the program into three levels. Level one is an eight week course, covering basics in soils, plant growth, yard & garden, pest ID/management tree care, etc.

To qualify as a Level One “Master Gardener” participants will receive 16 hours of formal training, pass an open book exam and fulfill 20 hours of community service. Experience has shown that the majority of people are mainly interested in learning more about horticulture and not specifically becoming a certified “Master Gardener.” People have the choice of fulfilling the requirements to become a certified Montana “Master Gardener,” or simply attending to learn.

The basic cost for all participants is $20 to cover program expenses. Additionally an excellent “MSU Master Gardener Handbook” is available for $35, and two companion guides, Tree and Shrub Selection and Tree and Shrub Grower’s Guide available for $10 each. Registration deadline is Friday, January 29, 2010. Please call Rene Kittle, Flathead Reservation Extension at 675-2700, or John Halpop, Sanders County Extension at 827-6934.
