Lady Hawks turn corner, down 2 conference foes

| January 20, 2010 12:00 AM

Last week, Coach Jason Reimer called the two-hour practice on Monday night the most important two hours of his Lady Hawk’s season. The team was reeling having just suffered blow out losses to Loyola Sacred Heart and Charlo.

Now whatever happened in those two hours must have struck the perfect chord for the team, because they have bounced back to record two consecutive conference victories and make themselves a force to be reckoned with in the league.

“We’re alive and we’re confident,” says Reimer. “I believe we can play with everyone in our conference.”

After the practice on Monday, the girls had to step immediately back into the fire as they faced a determined Trotters team who would love to avenge a close loss in the Coffee Cup Tournament.

It ended up being a senior and a freshman coming through for the Lady Hawks as they survived a closely fought battle to edge the Trotters 50-48.

Down three points to Plains with five minutes left, it was Freshman Allison Vaught who stepped up and nailed a game-tying three point shot. The shot tied the game, but it was her two clutch free throws with 16 seconds left in the game that iced it for the Lady Hawks. She ended up with a double double in the game with 14 points and 14 rebounds.

Although she owned the clutch performance of the night, Senior Karli Cavill played a perfect game from the point guard position as she tallied 12 points, 12 rebounds and 6 steals for the Lady Hawks as well as harassing point guard counterpart Heather Earhart with tough defense limiting her to 10 points that were only gained when Cavill was either out of the game or switched onto another player.

Fellow Senior Makayla Becker chipped in one of her best games of the year with 18 points.

On Saturday night, the Lady Hawks then traveled to St. Ignatius with the benefit of having seen the Mission team play against Plains the night before.

In another close game ,where Thompson Falls found themselves trailing with eight minutes left in the game, the team came back by sinking 12 free throws in the final quarter and finishing 15-20 from the line for a 43-36 victory.

Cavill led the Lady Hawks with 14 points in the game and fellow senior Kyla Molzhon also scored in double figures with 12 points. The win improved Thompson Falls’ record to 3-2 in conference and 4-5 overall.
