High school wrestling: A spectator sport

| January 27, 2010 12:00 AM

Dear Editor

Our small communities are fortunate to have exceptional young people residing among us. In some cases, we would not know of their accomplishments or abilities unless attending School or community functions. Some of those exceptional young men and women are involved in the Plains High School Wrestling program. Their dedication, sportsmanship, and skill are exemplary to witness.

High School wrestling is a spectator sport, but often takes place in communities away from Plains by invitation to other communities for tournaments or duals, as was the Ted Kato Tournament in Thompson Falls last week end.

This Thursday evening 6 p.m. on January 28 in the Plains High School Gym you have the opportunity to be on scene for the Plains High School Wrestling Invitational Dual. Teams competing will be:

Noxon; Mission/Charlo; and Plains. Some of these wrestlers are currently in the Montana State High School Wrestling MHSA top standings and have brought home medals from previous years state competitions in Billings.

Unlike some team sports, wrestling is a competition between individuals who’s individual match points add to the accumulative score for the team. You don’t have to have an understanding of the sport of wrestling to enjoy the competition, It is an event worth seeing. The wrestling team, the School Sports Program and individual competitors would appreciate your support. It will also be senior night to honor those whose high school wrestling career will end this season.

Sincerely

Nancy Beech
