The Plains wrestling team was hoping for five medals in Thompson Falls for the weekend meet, but came away with only two leaving mixed reviews for the team.

“We kind of had a bittersweet weekend,” says Head Coach Kenny Marjerrison. “Some things went really well and some things went really poor.”

Two of the things that went really well included a first place finish by Kenneth Beech in 119 lb. and a third place finish by Cole Goodwin in 135 lb.

Cole’s third place match was especially awesome for the Junior as he beat Tanner Gascon of Thompson Falls who is ranked second in the division and solidly pinned Cole the last time they wrestled in 53 seconds.

“You don’t see that, that much in wrestling. When you get pinned in the first round that’s pretty intimidating. When a kid thumps you, it’s tough to come back from that,” says Marjerrison. “He’s(Cole) got a lot of heart and is really tough mentally.”

Kenneth’s victory was also really promising for the team as he bested Tanner Lund of Florence who was the only other worrisome divisional competitor in his weight class that they had not yet seen this year. Kenneth handily won the match 13-3.

Another big story for the team came from yet unsung Freshman Joe Reyna who took home his first match win of the season by pinning Tim Schram of Thompson Falls.

Schram had Joe in the cradle in the first round, but when he rolled onto his back he allowed Joe to pin him at the 1:11 mark.

Joe couldn’t help being excited from his victory.

“It really felt good. No one thought I would win one all year. It felt really great. I proved the people wrong who thought I was weak and that I couldn’t do it,” says Joe.

Part of the victory comes from him continually slimming down and making it to the smaller weight classes. He started the year wrestling at 171 lb. but this last weekend he wrestled at 160 lb. and is hoping to make it to 150 lb.

Plains now has their final home mixer on Thursday and then they travel to Darby on Friday and Saturday for their final tournament before the Divisional Tournament kicks off in Deer Lodge.
