The warm sunny weather last Thursday, June 24, was welcomed by several Mineral County hospital employees as they moved out onto the lawn at noon for a barbeque. Tables, chairs and plenty of food were set up under tents on the lawn.

Hospital administrator Steve Carty said that the day's event was about unveiling the hospital's new mission and vision statement. In addition to unveiling the new statements and possibly at the forefront of the event was thanking the employees for their contributions to the hospital.

"Today was about thanking the employees. We wanted to do a thank you to employees for all their help," Carty said. "We also wanted to unveil our new mission statement and new vision statement."

The new mission statement reads, "We exist to make a difference in people's lives through excellent patient care." The new vision statements says, "We will be a leader in customer service, foster a culture of continuous quality improvement and explore opportunities focused on bringing healthcare to a greater number of community members." The hospital also unveiled a new logo, which features a tree and lines representing the river. In addition to the meal, employees also received t-shirts that pulled three words from the vision statement.

Carty said that one of the things that makes the staff at the hospital so great is also what he believes sets them apart.

"They're a personable staff and a well-trained staff," Carty said.

Carty, who has been with the hospital for only about a year and a half, said those were some of the reasons he chose to come to the hospital to work.

"When I met with the staff, I felt very comfortable talking with them and I felt very welcome here," Carty said. "They all really know their jobs and are a caring staff."

Cindy Fenn, who works on the kitchen staff, said that the residents are what makes her job so worthwhile. May Caldwell, a nurse, said that working at the hospital is nice because they are like one big family. She said that she just really enjoys being able to help patients.

Maxine Muller, who has worked at the hospital for 25 years agreed with Caldwell in that everybody who works at the hospital is a part of the big family.

"I really like it here," Muller said.

Muller moved from Minnesota to the area and fell in love with the weather and scenery. As a nurse, she said that she does everything. She said that employees work through things with a different attitude than others might.

"I remember one time I got into a spat with a fellow nurse and my director at the time told me to take her out for coffee," Muller said. "We have to be able to get along. This is a small hospital and we have to work through things, work well together and keep things moving smoothly."

Daisy Maghiany, who has only worked at the hospital for three years, said she has found that everyone at the hospital does do a great job and works as a team all the way.
