Nine Sanders County youth attended the 80th Annual 4-H Congress held on the Montana State University campus in Bozeman, July 6-9. "Unlock the Treasure" was a perfect theme for the event at which youth gained skills in the areas of technology, leadership, communication, community service and team work; treasures that will benefit them on their journey through life.

Joining nearly 400 other 4-H members from across the state were Mariah Naegeli, Beca and John Gunderson, Alana and Dusty Dettwiler, Nicole Ribeiro, Charles French, Will Fausett and Ethan Snell.

Chaperoning the group were Sarah Naegeli, Raoul Ribeiro, Karen Dwyer, 4-H Leaders and John Halpop and Meghan Phillippi, Extension Agents.

Nicole Ribeiro (Dog) and Mariah Naegeli (Community Service) were two of eight State 4-H Award recipients across Montana. Both members showed growth in their respective award areas combined with their leadership, citizenship and communication efforts making them excellent candidates for the award.

John and Beca Gunderson competed in demonstrations. John placed second with his demonstration entitled "Too Hot to Handle" and Beca placed third with her demonstration entitled "Bubble Trouble."

Will Fausett placed second in the Wildlife Habitat Evaluation Program (WHEP). Mariah Naegeli received first place in the Quilt Competition.

In addition to Beca and John, Alana Dettwiler (Red Award) competed in the demonstration contest. Along with Will Fausett, Dusty Dettwiler (Red Award) and Nicole Ribeiro (Red Award) participated in the WHEP contest.

Charles French severed as a youth member of the Montana 4-H Foundation for the past year.

He completed his year of service by emceeing the Foundation Showcase program. Ethan Snell served as a judge for the Stir-Ups competition.

The youth had opportunities to gain knowledge in areas such as water quality, animal science, wind energy, pottery recreation and fitness, Montana PBS Production, first aid, geocaching, plant science and more.

As part of the community service project, counties contributed items for Hero Packs. Hero Packs are a way for 4-H youth to provide a salute to military children and youth for their strength and sacrifice while parents are deployed.

Motivating and captivating speakers included Barrett Keene; Holly Matz; and SGT. Ryan Brubaker.
