Lunch on the Lot

For most people, the common place to eat lunch is inside at the kitchen table and when the weather is warmer, some people will head outside to have a picnic in the park where they will often sit at picnic tables or on a blanket laid across the grass. On June 9, however, Mineral County residents are invited to eat lunch in a lot that is vacant.

Peggy Temple, who is on the quilting guild's team for Relay for Life, said that on June 9 residents are invited to the lot that sits vacant in Superior next to the Mullan Trail Bank for lunch. Tables will be set up and all the teams that are participating in the relay will have various food items for sale ranging from hamburgers and chips, pies, Frito pies, pulled pork, chips and cookies.

Temple said that the fundraiser is another opportunity for teams to raise money that will go to the American Cancer Society to battle cancer.

"When someone joins a team they make a commitment to raise at least a $100 a person," Temple said. "This is another avenue for them to achieve that."

Temple said that teams usually do group fundraisers and then they split the money among each other. She said that the Lunch in the Lot event usually allows teams to raise between $100 and $200, some doing better most of the time.

Temple also said that Lunch in the Lot has been a successful event in the past and is one that they've been doing for five or six years now. Last year, they held the event during the car show, but found out that it didn't work as well. Temple said the event is usually enjoyed by all.

"It's fun," Temple said. "There's a lot of activity lot going on and a lot of good food for a good cause. It's a midday lunch. People can come and just visit."

Temple said that there is also going to be a few raffle tickets for items that will be raffled off during the event. Temple also said that the 4-H would be doing a car wash so people can come and eat lunch and when they're done they can return to their cars, which have been washed. Luminaries will also be available for purchase. These are the bags that hold a light and are displayed during the Luminary Ceremony during the relay. Temple said these bags are usually decorated and or bought in memory or honor of someone who has battled cancer.

"Hopefully the weather will cooperate," Temple said, extending an invitation. "Everybody should come and support relay for life."
