Burn permits extedned until end of June

| June 25, 2010 4:05 PM

Fire Managers are extending all burn permits issued from the Superior Ranger Station through Monday June 28, 2010. "Predictions of precipitation for the next couple weeks should give homeowners more time to get their spring cleaning done," says Jim Ward, AFMO. After June 28th, all burn permits will be voided and no burning will be allowed. Already, this burn season, Volunteer Fire Departments and Forest Service have responded to three burns that escaped the homeowner's control.

The homeowners thought their burns were out, but that was not the case. In between rain storms, the piles were able to dry out, rekindled and threaten neighboring property.

Remember, if you have or will be burning please make sure your burn is completely out. Often piles look out, but given the right conditions, they can rekindle easily.

Insure your pile is dead out with these simple rules. Drown it with water, stir it with a hand tool and feel the area with your hand for any heat. If the pile feels warm to the touch, add more water.

All current 2010 burn permit holders will automatically be renewed. If your pile is larger than a Volkswagen Bug, you are required to contact the Forest Service at 406-822-4233 before you burn. At this time of year, all large piles must be inspected by a Forest Service representative or Fire Chief.

If you do not have a permit yet this season, you must obtain a valid burn permit before you begin to burn.

"Even though your burn permit is good until June 28th, if the rain stops and things dry out, use caution in burning your piles later this month. It might be better to wait until the fall to finish rather than run the risk of your pile escaping your control," says Debbie Lepo, Fire Prevention Tech.

If you have any questions, contact the Superior Ranger Station at 406-822-4233.
