This past weekend Jessica Read, a junior at Plains High School, competed in a two-day High School Rodeo event in Deer Lodge, Montana.

With a stellar performance on Saturday, she competed in three events. First, she competed in goat tying.

For this timed event, she has to ride her horse to a goat tied to a stake down the arena, bail off, catch the goat and tie three legs, which have to stay tied for qualified time.

Not only was this a personal best for Jessica, but she was leading the pack with a 8.12 second for a first place finish.

Next, she competed in breakaway roping and with a time of 5.72 seconds, placed 8th. Finally, she competed in barrel racing, and again made a personal best with a time of 18.38 seconds for a third place finish.

On Sunday, Jessica once again placed first in goat tying with a time of 8.47 seconds, 13th in barrel racing a no time in breakaway roping.

For her first time ever, she won the goat tying average and came home with a championship buckle.

Next weekend, she will be competing in Darby, then off to districts over Memorial Day weekend and state finals in Bozeman June 9-13. Let's get behind this local cowgirl and wish her luck competing.
