The Superior girls won their first district title this last weekend at district competition in class 6-B at the Missoula County Stadium. Deer Lodge came in second with 100 points even, but the Superior girls were several strides ahead with 131 points to sweep the competition on Friday and Saturday. After seven events on Friday, the Superior girls led with 56 points to Deer Lodge's second place total of 49.

On Saturday, Nicole Stroot brought the team a first place win in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 48.95 and she also won the 100 meter hurdles.

"Nicole Stroot surprised us by winning both 100m hurdles and the 300m hurdles. She cut time in both of these races to beat the senior hurdler from Florence," said Coach Tori Lucier.

Stroot joined the winning team of Jessica Taylor, Kaitlynn Koke and Ashley Blaylock on the track to sweep the 1,600 relay with a time of 4.24:31.

Shelby Cooper brought home a few second and third place finishes as well. She was third in the 100 meter dash running the short distance race with a time of 13.80. Blaylock took sixth in the place with a time of 14.30 seconds. Cooper was second in the 200 meter dash with a time of 28.49 and Blaylock again brought in a sixth place win with a time of 29.35. Cooper was fourth in the long jump with a distance of 15-5.50.

Stroot also garnered a third place win in the field event with a distance of 15-6.75, while Taylor came in sixth place with a jump of 13-7.5. Taylor tied for third place in the girls' high jump with a height of 4-2. Taylor also placed sixth in the shot put with a throw of 26-4.

Kinzie Cooper's legs were hot in the long distance running events. She managed a second place finish in the 800 meter dash with a time of 2:36.83, ten seconds behind a first place win. In the 3,200, Cooper took third with a time of 13:31.01.

In the javelin throw, Koke took a second place win with a distance of 105-0.

On Friday, Blaylock ran away with a win in the 400 meter dash with a time of 63.55. Koke came in fifth with a time of 65.46. Kinzie Cooper ran herself into second place in the 1,600 distance event with a finishing time of 5:55.21.

Shelby Cooper joined Stroot, Blaylock and Koke for the 400 meter relay and they came away with a win. They ran the race in 52.09 seconds. Cooper took second in the triple jump with 32-9 and Cox came in sixth with 31-11. Cox also took a sixth place finish in the 100 meter hurdles.

Taylor grabbed fifth in the discus with a distance of 86-4 and at the pole vault, Kinzie Cooper finished fourth with a height of 7-0.

On the boys' side, the team ended the two day competition in fifth place overall with 56 points. Bajin Smith, RJ Frederick, Matt Campbell and Garrett Stephens took third in the 1,600 meter relay with 3:36.68. Smith, Stephens and Campbell also teamed up with Christofer Erickkson for the 400 meter relay and took second, 46.07. Erickkson also netted fifth in the shot put and a third in the pole vault. Campbell, Billy Smith and Kevin Ryan also all placed in the top six in the pole vault and will move onto divisionals.

Eric Steinbach managed sixth in the triple jump with a distance of 38-7.5. Hayes grabbed a sixth in the 110 hurdles. Bajin Smith is also moving on in the long distance 800 meters. He grabbed a time of 2:05.91 at districts for a fifth place finish. Stephens grabbed fourth in the 400 with a time of 53.81. Erickkson took fifth in the shot put and Ryan Bowers took third with a throw of 39-5.

Lucier feels that all the students should do well in divisionals and make it into the state competition.

"They should do great we have a ton of talent on our teams and we should be taking all of them to state," Lucier said. "They will need to keep working hard and improving because other teams will be doing the same."

First though, the team will head to divisionals this weekend at Missoula Big Sky.
