Golfers struggle at state

The St. Regis golfers gave it their all on May 18 and 19. The Tigers spent two days playing at Madison Meadows Golf Course in Ennis at the state golf tournament. With no teams, either in boys or girls, it was a competition among individuals.

"We played as well as we could," Coach Dan Park said.

With rain delays and weather concerns, the Tigers hit the greens on Tuesday hoping to play well and end the season on a high note. Needless to say, things didn't turn out as Park quite hoped. Zane Worrall, who Park said hadn't played up to his potential was hoping to see the golfer spark at the state level. However, Worrall shot scores for both days that were higher than his average. He finished Tuesday with a 92 and ended with a 95.

"These were higher than his average, but everybody has their bad days," Park said.

Worrall hadn't played in a tournament for a couple of weeks upon playing at the state competition either, which may have had some effect on the golfer.

Park's second boy, Thomas Spencer, came into the tournament, qualifying with a 100 at the last possible moment. Spencer golfed better on Tuesday, finishing the first day with a 105 and then scoring 119 on Wednesday.

"He did all right," Park said.

Park also had two girls qualify for the state tournament, Jocelyn Dockter and Shelby Berg.

"Jocelyn Dockter was real consistent, so she did well in that way," Park said. "She shot a 112 on the first day and then a 114. Shelby had a rough time. She was sick for the three days that we were there, couldn't really eat much, but she played. She toughed it out and I was real proud of her for that."

Berg, who like Dockter, had been scoring in the top ten individuals at past tournaments golfed a 151 the first day and a 141 on the second day. Park said that she was doing really well in the first nine, shooting a 66, but after a while he said that the sickness just caught up to her, but he said he was glad to see her shooting a little better in the second round.

Park said that the course offered a challenge to the golfers and was in pretty good shape. He said that he felt that nerves might have been a bit of a problem for a couple of the kids.

"I think the course was set up well," Park said. "I think that nerves might have also played a role with Thomas and Shelby as they'd never been before."

Park said that it was a good end to the season regardless of how things turned out as the kids played the best that they could on the given days. He said he's looking forward to next season as there should be a lot of talent coming up as well as some returning talent.
