Because you care, there's Energy Share!

Recent media headlines have been full of bad news about our economy.  More Montana citizens are now getting federal assistance to help them pay for groceries than ever before.  Twelve percent of the state’s population gets benefits from SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program).  Food Banks are serving 30 percent more children now than they were last year.  Many times it feels like life is anything but good.

However, if you look around a little bit you’ll see some really positive things happening in Montana.  One of those is how every-day people making average wages help Energy Share, whose main purpose is to help Montanans who are facing energy emergencies.

“Over the last two years Energy Share helped 463 families in this area,” said Tod Young, Energy Share Board member representing Flathead Electric Cooperative.  “We would not be able to do nearly as much if it weren’t for the generosity of all Montanans.” This month all utility customers will find Energy Share donation envelopes or pledge cards in their November bills or their issue of Rural Montana magazine.  Last year over $250,000 was raised statewide.  The Board’s policy is that 100% of these gifts be used for families in need - none of the private donations are used for administration.  For example, if you live in Kalispell, 100% of your tax-deductible donation to Energy Share is first used in that area to help a family stay warm.  It is truly a matter of neighbors helping neighbors.

With more people out of work Energy Share is seeing a higher demand for its services.  Between 2008 and 2010 the number of people who cited unemployment or reduced wages as a reason for seeking help from Energy Share increased by nine percent, a telling indicator of what Montanans are struggling with.

Energy Share concentrates on providing one-time emergency bill assistance. Families who live from paycheck to paycheck face financial emergencies when unexpected expenses occur.  Frequently, these recipients repay Energy Share after their emergency or need has ended.

In addition to emergency bill assistance, Energy Share runs a refrigerator replacement program for eligible seniors and disabled folks who own their homes.  Those in need of energy assistance this winter can call Community Action Partnership of Northwest Montana in Kalispell at 406-758-5433 or 800-344-5979 or the statewide Energy Share office at 1-888-779-7589.  For more information log onto www.energysharemt.com.
