The Mineral County Performing Arts Council is excited to start their 2010 – 2011 concert series with the Greater Missoula Area Single Reed on a Wooden Horn Society. (GMASRWHS) The concert will be held Oct. 1, at the Superior Baptist Church, 609 5th Avenue East, in Superior at 7  p.m.

The group name was formed out of a joke by one of their members. When they were designing a program for one of their concerts, he jokingly wrote down GMASWHS as a very long version of calling them a clarinet ensemble, to use until they decided on a real group name. However, the other members loved the fake name so much, it stuck!

The GMASRWHS  currently consists of Megan Bergauff, William Haffey, William Manning, David Smith, Dianne Thrailkill and Corina Vandeberg. They are a group of mostly non-professional musicians with an age range covering 40 plus years that simply enjoy playing music together. They play a variety of music, and like to give their audience a little bit of everything during a concert.

The GMASRWHS was formed in the spring of 2006 with some clarinet players from the Missoula Community Band. It was initially formed to play a few pieces at a Memorial Day function, which subsequently was canceled. However, they were having so much fun playing together, they decided to continue and seek out other places to play. Over the last four plus years, they have played at the Montana/Idaho clarinet festival, two Missoula City Band concerts, many services at two different churches, holiday concerts, an Italian picnic, Fort Missoula, and as part of the “ Zephyr ensemble” for the Hildegard Von Bingen festival.

The Mineral County Performing Arts Council has brought in many many talented artists from our very own communities: Peter Park and Dolce Canto, Scott Billadeau, Jodi Marshall and Laura Loge. We have had pianist Gleb Ivanov, pianist Christopher Hahn and cellist Amit Peled, Jack Gladstone, Rob Quist, the Sweet Adelines and the Singing Sons of Beaches to name a few.

If you have questions, are interested in being a sponsor or making a donation to help defray the cost of bringing in the artists, you may contact Mary Jo Berry at 822-4800.
