Superior notches victory

Last week, the Superior volleyball team had a slow schedule with just one game on Tuesday night, but it came with plenty of pressure.

It was homecoming week and the girls were playing a county rival, the St. Regis Lady Tigers.

Superior received the serve in the first game and jumped to a 3-0 lead early on. That lead, however, would be quickly threatened. The game was tied at 8-8 before the Lady Bobcats pulled ahead again to 15-11. But with some hard work, the Tigers bounced back and tied the game 16-16 and eventually took the lead away from the Superior girls, 19-16. But when the Lady Tigers relinquished the serve, they relinquished the game. The Lady Bobcats grabbed the ball and ran, winning 25-20.

In the second game, St. Regis came out ahead, but ended up trailing behind for the first few minutes of the game. Still, the game became tied 8-8. St. Regis jumped ahead of the Lady Bobcats for a few points, but once the home team regained the lead, they took the game. The Superior girls won 25-17.

The third game was equally close, but the Lady Bobcats managed to grasp the lead and the win, 25-23.

Coach Kinsy Cox said that she felt it was a great match.

“I think that’s the best team St. Regis has had in awhile. They looked good,” Cox said.

Cox said she the Superior girls were handling a few new changes on Tuesday night. She said that she changed the rotation and tweaked positions a bit.

“I also put in my JV girls because there wasn’t a separate game and they did a really good job,” Cox said. “I threw a few new things at them and they handled it well.”

Cox said she also put in Rhandy Cox to set who tied with regular setter Cary Chamberlain on number of assists. The coach said the girls did a good job on offense and had a good night of

serving.

Cox said it was very exciting to win during homecoming week.

“It’s fun,” Cox said. “And it’s getting to a point that (volleyball) is becoming fun for the girls as well.”

Ashley Blaylock had five kills, six digs and four aces, while teammate Kaitlynn Koke had two blocks.

The girls played Thompson Falls on Tuesday and will play Plains on Thursday at home.
