Trojans ground Lady Hawks, end winning streak
The Lady Hawks looked impressive last week, breezing by both Plains, 3-0, and Valley Christian, 3-1, before being grounded by Drummond.
On Tuesday, in front of a raucous crowd, the hosting Lady Hawks swept cross-valley rival Plains 25-20, 25-21, 25-15 for a District 7-B win.
“The crowd from both programs was great,” Thompson Falls head coach Sandra Kazmierczak said. “It was a good feeling. The gym was full. We played hard. That was a good game.”
Hope Reid and Makayla Becker both had double digit kills (12 and 11 respectively) in the Lady Hawks win. Allison Vaught set 21 assists and Emily Wadsworth snagged 15 digs.
For Plains, Kelsey Beagley had 24 digs, and Nicki Kunzer added four kills, five assists and two aces. Kayla Revier contributed two blocks.
Versus Valley Christian on Thursday, the Lady Hawks looked equally impressive, although Kazmierczak wasn’t entirely satisfied, en route to a 25-18, 21-25, 25-16, 26-24 victory.
“They were playing pretty hard, but I felt like we could have played better,” she said. “We still have some things that we’re working on in practice, like everybody is. We’re all trying to keep everything going so we can put it all together for the [post-season] tournament.”
Reid led the hosting Lady Hawks, putting down 12 kills and a pair of blocks. Vaught dished out 29 assists, and eight aces, while Becker had another strong showing tallying 11 kills and 17 digs.
Heidi Cross led the Eagles with six kills and three aces and Sarah Allen secured 20 digs.
The Drummond game, however, was a different affair, as Thompson falls would wind up on the other end of a sweep, 25-12, 25-17, 25-23, on Saturday.
“We did the best we could,” Kazmierczak said. “Drummond is an awesome team, all around. Great hitters. A lot of enthusiasm.”
Becker tallied 15 kills to lead the Bluehawks, who fell to 5-8 overall. Wadsworth had 15 digs, while Vaught had 13 assists.
Emilie Angelo and Jessi Dahl nailed down seven kills each and Rhianna Pool added six more to lead the 10-1 Trojans. Defensively, Angelo helped the cause with 20 digs.
Despite the loss, the Lady Hawks, who had previously won four-straight, seem to be peaking at the right time to make a run at the district tournament in two weeks.
“We need to play our hardest like we have been,” Kazmierczak added. “They’ve been performing well so we’ll see how far that takes us. We’re looking forward to it.”
This week, Thompson Falls will host Bigfork on Thursday at 4, and then Florence Saturday at 3 p.m.
