The Superior Bobcats came out of the gate with a 21-point first quarter and never looked back as they defeated the hosting Plains/Hot Springs Savage Horsemen on Friday night 49-24. The win pushed the undefeated Bobcats to 2-0, while the Savage Horsemen slid to 0-2.

“You’ve got to come to play four quarters and we didn’t,” said Plains/Hot Springs head coach Jim Lawson. “We were down early, but we battled back. I was pretty happy with the way the kids played because they battled back and scored some points.”

The Bobcats looked sharp early as senor quarterback Tanner Coon capped off their opening drive with a one-yard touchdown run.

The Savage Horsemen stalled on their initial drive, with a three-and-out giving Superior, and Coon, another chance to score. Again, the Bobcat’s speed and precision were rewarded as Coon scampered into the end-zone, this time from six yards out.

Superior would draw blood once more in the opening session to extend their game-high lead to 21 insurmountable points.

At this point the Savage Horsemen had two options: saddle up one more time or hang up their spurs. They chose to give the home crowd something to cheer about as they traded points with the Bobcats (24-28) for the remaining three quarters.

“You know we’ve been improving a lot and so we’ve had some tough game early in the season. We knew these non-conference games were pretty tough,” said Lawson. “They’re playing pretty well and when I watch film I see we’re doing a lot of good things.”

Plain/Hot Springs was led by a quartet of seniors. Quarterback Carson Lilja went 11 of 20 for 104 yards passing and one touch down, while kicking three extra points, and a 35-yard field goal. Running-mate Taylor Firestone led the Savage Horsemen with 80 rushing yards, and two touchdowns by way of 12 carries. Trevor Brass was Lilja’s favorite target with four catches, and an interception on defense, and middle-linebacker Cody Hoff had 14 tackles.

Coon threw for 224 yards and two touchdowns, and ran for two more. Sophomore Adam Cay caught five passes for 100 yards and two scores, as Superior advanced to a Class B non-district win.

Junior Wide receiver Tanner Ostrom is day-to-day with a sprained ankle. “He’s pretty tough, I’m sure he’ll wanna play Friday, but we’ll have to see. And he’s one of our best players so that hurt us,” said Lawson.

Plains/Hot Springs will host Bigfork next Friday at 7 p.m.
